Memorial services will be held this Sunday at 3 p.m. in Mount Olivet Lutheran Church for two well known brothers missing since late last June and presumed drowned in the waters of the Skeena River.
Harold and Arne Hovden, owners and operators of the troller-halibutter Kulla, landed a halibut trip in Prince Rupert on June 24. Harold phoned his father, veteran fisherman Alf. H. Hovden of North Vancouver, the following day to say they planned a car trip to the interior, possibly as far as Prince George, during their eight day layup.
That was the last contact members of the family had with either of the men, both members of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union since they started fishing in 1946.
They hired a U-drive for three days, planning to return to Prince Rupert on July 1 and leave the following day for the halibut grounds.
They said they would be writing home before going out and for several days the family was expecting mail to arrive, unaware that the boat was still tied up in Prince Rupert.
DEALER PHONES
On July 4, the Prince Rupert car dealer phoned Alfhild Hovden, wife of missing fisherman Arne Hovden, in North Vancouver to ask if he were home.
A little later, the police interviewed members of the family.
"That was the -first time we knew something was wrong," Alf Hovden told The Fisherman this week.
He got in touch with the police in Prince Rupert immediately and they confirmed that the brothers were four or five days overdue in returning from the interior.
Reports began coming in and in an effort to get first hand information, the family sent son in law James Empey to Prince Rupert.
He went to Terrace and interviewed persons who thought they had seen the men but all turned out to be cases of mistaken identity.
From then on, the family could only wait and worry as a plane and helicopter search by police failed to yield any trace of the Hovden brothers.
CAR SPOTTED
Finally, about a month later, their worst fears were realised when a woman walking along the railroad tracks about 18 miles west of Terrace spotted a car wheel protruding from the water.
She notified police who hauled the car from the subsiding waters
of the Skeena. It was identified as the U-drive rented by the Hov-dens but the only object in the vehicle was Arne Hovden's wrist watch.
Finally, a few weeks ago, a suitcase belonging to the men was found drifting down the Skeena.
"That's about everything there is to say," Alf Hovden said. "We are still looking for them but I guess it's pretty hopeles now."
The Kulla was brought down from Prince Rupert by Stewart Tvedten and another son in law, Arvo Junnila, and she is now at North Shore Marine Basin.
RETIRED IN '48
Alf Hovden, now 70, was forced to give up fishing after the 1948 season when ill health made it impossible for him to continue. But he had already been a fisherman for 40 years.
Born in Norway, he started fishing in 1909 as a lad of 15, including in his varied experience whaling, sealing, longlining, herring seining, and gillnetting.
He came to Canada in 1923, and the following year went out whaling for the old Rose Harbor operation.
He fished out of Prince Rupert the next two years, seining herring and salmon for the Canadian Fishing Company.
Then for six years, he fished on the seiner Chamiss Bay for Black-ville Fisheries.
After that, he fished for Nootka Packing and to a lesser extent for Nelson Brothers. He also fished halibut for several seasons.
CAME IN 1928
Hovden said that in 1928, his wife joined him in this country, bringing their three children, a daughter and two sons, Harold, 9, and Arne, 8. Another son and daughter were born in Canada.
Harold joined the Navy and Arne the Army, serving until 1945. Arne was overseas during the war and in the front lines a good part of the time.
It was at their father's suggestion that they entered the fishing industry, buying the 40 foot trol-ler-halibutter in 1946 when she was a year old.

the boys for two years, passing along the knowledge he had acquired with his many years of experience.
After that, they went on their own, longlining and trolling together ever since.
Up until two years ago, they sold to Canadian Fishing Company at Butedale but since then they have been selling in Prince Rupert, mainly to Atlin Fisheries.
BOTH LEAVE FAMILIES
In addition to their mother and father, the missing fishermen are survived by their wives and children.
Arne Hovden leaves his wife Alfhild, and four children ranging in age from eight to 14 years. They are Alan, the eldest, Gary, Katherine and Kenneth.
Harold Hovden leaves his wife Patricia and daughter Karen, 17.
The also leave a brother Norman, and two sisters, Mrs. Arvo (Sylvia) Junnila, and Mrs. James
