New Silver Dolphin' Latest, Largest To J oin Rupert Co-op Fishing Fleet
Pierce, Innes Jointly Own 97 Foot Vessel
<"vNE of the largest steel com-bination fishing vessel built in British Columbia and the largest vessel in the Prince Rupert fleet underwent her time trials May 19 in Vancouver and is now. on the halibut grounds.
She is the 91 foot Silver Dolphin, launched by Benson Bros. Shipyard of Vancouver May 4, second only and similar in design to the 95 foot, six inch Canadian 1 built by the same shipyard earlier this year for the Radii brothers.
The new vessel, financed in part by the Prince Rupert Fishermen's Credit Union and jointly owned by skipper Percy Pierce and engineer Aubrey Innes, both of Prince Rupert, has a 24 foot beam and 10 foot draft.
Built for halibut longlining and herring seining, she will pack an estimated 250,000 pounds of halibut (if such a catch were possible) and something over 250 tons of herring.
Her trials produced an average speed of 12 knots under urging from her 500 hp Caterpillar

diesel. Her run to Prince Rupert was done in 40 hours and 30 minutes.
A UNIQUE FEATURE OF
this vessel, designed by prominent naval architect William Reid, is the fact that she is largely electric.
Her General Motors diesel generator units supply enough electrical energy to keep 800 light bulbs of 100 kilowatts each shining brightly on a 24 hour a day basis.
In a more practical sense, the Silver Dolphin is completely AC current throughout. Her galley stove is 208 volt, three phase, thermostatically controlled, ordinary domestic type. Appliances can be used in the galley. Lighting is 110 volt AC, the generators being designed so that both 208 and 110 AC can be taken off at the same time.
The two GM diesel generator units, model 3-71 of the new N series, squeeze 23 hp or a little better than 15 kilowatt hours out of every gallon of fuel they consume.
The units are a handed pair with all items such as filters on the inboard side. One unit is fitted with both hydraulic and electrical starting. If at any time all batteries aboard are dead, the generator units can be started hydraulically by a hand prime pump. Both units are fitted with automatic shutdown in case of overspeed, low lube oil pressure,
