FIRST SOUTH ATLANTIC TRIP
Cuba Expands Fishing Operations
One of Cuba's new ultramodern fishing vessels, the Biajaiba, has just returned from a 12,000 mile round trip, the longest yet made by any distant water Cuban vessel.
The 71-day fishing trip took the Biajaiba and its 55-man crew — 9 Soviet, 46 Cuban — 6,000 miles from Havana to a point 75 miles off the coast of Argentina between Quequen and Punta San Bias. Her catch totalled 450 metric tons, more than 860,000 pounds of which were "Spanish" hake.
The Biajaiba left Havana on September 19. Fishing operations began October 13, 82 miles off the coast of Uruguay. On October 27, the ship moved farther southward, to a point 52 miles off Mar del Plata on the coast of Argentine and finally proceeded still farther south, to a position never before reached by a Cuban fishing vessel, between Quequen and Punta San Bias.
The vessel's success is credited to the combination of experience and specialized technical knowl-

edge of the Soviet officers, and the extraordinary will-to-succeed of the 46 Cuban crew members. Many of the crew are extremely young, some just 17, men who joined the ship after finishing their studies at fishing schools or working in Cuba's Gulf fleet.
YOUNG "VETERAN"
The ship's third officer, Nelson Gonzalez, for instance, is considered a "veteran." He has already served for five years aboard Cuban fishing boats and is just 18 years old.
Capt. Ivan Kzainiukov, the Soviet skipper, has a very high
opinion of the Cuban personnel under his command.
"I can assure you that during this unforgettable voyage we had a chance to confirm our high opinion of the Cuban crew," he said.
"During the first round of fishing, we caught little more than three tons of hake. But we persisted until we reached up to 20 tons of fish in a single catch."
According to Kzainiukov, they were obliged to steer a course farther and farther south as summer approached in the southern hemisphere, since the hake seek

At the time of his death he owned the Allaverdy and Advance 2, although an earlier heart attack compelled him to forego active fishing this past season.
He is survived by his wife, Dagne; one son, Irwin, a fisherman and shoreworker with Prince Rupert Fishermen's Co-op for several years; one daughter, Mrs. Eileen Greene, former shoreworker and United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union member at Oceanside Cannery; .and two sisters, Mrs. K. waters between 10 and 11 degrees centigrade at depths of from 60 to 75 meters.
SUPPLY AT SEA
The Biajaiba was supplied en route by Soviet ships with 30 tons of fresh water and 60 tons of fuel oil, as well as two tons of motor lubrication.
On her return trip, she was able to transfer a drum of 220 kilograms of refrigeration oil to a Soviet ship which passed it on to the Biajaiba's sister ship, Guasa, en route to the hake fishing zones.
This double transfer of refrigeration oil at sea was made to provide the Guasa with additional refrigeration capacity, since the Biajaiba had completed her fishing and no longer needed the oil.
These supply at sea operations by the Soviet fleet permit Cuban ships in far away regions to receive supplies which cannot be obtained in ports of other countries because of the blockade maintained against Cuba by the United States.
Japan Will Fish Arctic
Japanese salmon fishing operations in the Arctic Ocean this year will be conducted by a vessel from the same company which sent the Darin Maru No. 8 to the Chukchi Sea last July, the Japanese Fisheries Agency reported recently.
A total of some 85 metric tons of chum salmon was taken during last year's venture between latitudes 66 and 68 degrees North, which resulted in the agency receiving many applications from major salmon operators wishing to enter the Arctic fishery this coming season.
Reasons given by the agency for limiting the operation to one company, and again licensing on a trial basis only, are the uncertain level of abundance of Arctic salmon and the fact that an increase in fishing might antagonize the Soviet Union and the United States, which has already voiced its concern over the effect of Japanese operations on Eskimo fishing for food supplies.
Some spokesmen for the Japanese fishing industry, meanwhile, have been voicing the demand that their government take over the Arctic salmon operation, using four 200 ton ships with a combined catch potential of 400 tons. This, they claim, would allow more effective assessment of the resource without harming stocks or antagonizing other nations.
