Trawl Strike Committee's Social Events Prove Popular
• As these pictures show, the social events staged by the trawl strike committee in Fishermen's Hall at Vancouver have become popular affairs where, for a few hours, strikers and other Union members and support-
ers can relax after long committee sessions and turns on the picket line. Staff members at Fishermen's Hall are contributing to programs that draw larger crowds

Federal fisheries minister H. J. Robichaud has been asked to state whether or not a permit has been granted to the provincial forest service to conduct another Stellako River log drive next month.
In a letter to Robichaud this week, UFAWU president H. (Steve) Stavenes said the Union's general executive board had discussed the recent announcement by provincial resources minister R. G. Williston that a log drive would take place for "experimental purposes" some time in June.
"We want to lodge the strongest possible protest against the issuance of any permit, experimentally or otherwise, for log driving on the Stellako," the letter stated.

CONFLICTING CLAIMS
During this year's UFAWU lobby to Victoria on February 21 and 22, several Socred MLAs, including W. H. Murray (Prince Rupert) and Cyril Shelford (Ora-ineca), said they regretted the log drive but claimed the federal ban was not instituted until a few days before the drive was scheduled to take place.
The record shows that a federal order in council was issued on February 9, four months before the drive, revoking section 2 of the B.C. logging order and amending it to read:
"No person shall place or otherwise release logs into the Stellako River except under authority of a permit in writing from the (federal fisheries) minister and in accordance with the conditions set out therein." PICKET THREATENED
Williston's statement that the drive would be conducted this year for "experimental purposes" was labelled as "ridiculous" by

Howard Paish, secretary of the B.C. Wildlife Federation, who suggested the provincial government was again taking the action to provide the logging company with "an opportunity to get logs downstream cheaply."
UFAWU vice president T. (Buck) Suzuki said on April 27 that the Union was considering joining resort owners, sportsmen and others interested in protection of the resource, and forming a combined picket line on the Stellako if the drive takes place as announced.
Suzuki blasted Williston for his refusal to accept the reports of federal fisheries department and salmon commission scientists which recorded destruction of large areas of spawning grounds as a result of previous drives on the Stellako.
