JERUSALEM (JPFS/JTA) -
The terrorist who stabbed an Egged bus driver on the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem highway last Saturday night has confessed that he murdered a 38-year-old Israeli construction worker in Tel Aviv last Thursday according to police. The deceased was identified as Michael Ashtamker of Moshav ' Roglit.
The suspect, a 26-year-old Arab from Ramallah, -led. his interrogators to the body, which he had hidden near the old Opera House at the promenade end of Allenby Street.
"During interrogatiion -by the security services, the suspect admitted that three days ago he killed a Jew who was working with him at a construction site in Tel Aviv,'' a police spokesman said: *'The suspectsaid that his motives were^'iiation-alistic.'"; '
Police say that the assailant appeared to have been operating aloiie and not as part of an or-gapnized cell when he tried to force the bus into a deep ravine. The bus attack occurred near Telse Stone, about 12 kilometres outside Jerusalem, very close to where a terrorist from Gaza forced a bus oyer a pre-cipice, killing 16 passengers on July 6.
On Aug. 24, a drunk man who appeared to be mentally ill tried to grab the steering wheel of a bus on the same highway in the same area. He was overpowered and claimed he was trying to make the driver stop so that he could giet off.
The repeat attack on Saturday night has led to renewed critkism of security measures on buses.
The attack occurred at 10.50 p.m. The Palestinian assailant, sitting in the second row and wearing a black skullcap, got up from his seat, approached the
village of Beit Hanina in north Jerusalem late Friday night.

and brought the vehicle to a halt. The • three then hauled-the attacker from the. bus and furious passengers began to hit him.
A police jeep which happened to be passing stopped when it saw the biis pull over, to the side. On Sunday, as riots broke out in towns and villages in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, at least four Palestinians were killed and scores were wounded by Israeli security forces. The wounded included a.„16-month-old girl in Nablus who lost ah eye to a rubber bullet.
Earlier last week, Israeli Chief of Staff Gen. Dan Siipmron told a Knesset panel that the Israel Defence Force is busy tracking down 700 hardcore activists of the intifada considered the "instigators" of violence against Israeli soldiers and Arabs they see as collaborators.
According to military statistics Shomron cited to members of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee, 468 Arabs have been killed by the security forces since the Palestinian uprising began more than 20 months ago,
'^coUaborators" killed by Palestinians since the beginning of the intifada have been kiUedih 1989. The statistics conflrm the sharp rise in internal Palestinian violence during the past eight months.
Of the 4^754 attacks on "Collaborators 'and other Arab targets in the nearly 21 months of the uprising, 970, or 56 per cent, took place in the past eight months. Of the 970 attacks, 572 were against suspected "collaborators^" their families or other Palestinians identified with Israel, while 398 were directed against "other local elements."
The figures showed that two thirds (164 Out of 245) of the Palestinians wounded in these attacks we.re hurt this year!

GENEVA (JTA) -
A U.N. human-rights panel wound up a four-week session here by accusing Israel of war crimes against Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip..
The anti-Israel resolution, backed by the Soviet Union. Cuba and Somalia, as well as the Arab countries, was adopted Aug. 31 by the U.N, Subcommis-sion on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities. Canada does not sit on the subcom-mission.
The vote by secret ballot was 15-5, with two abstentions.
The resolution accused Israel of torture, expulsions, collective punishment, detention without trial and other violations of the Fourth (jeneva Convention, which protects civilians in time of war.
The offences Israel is accused of are war crimes under international law.
The Israeli observer, Rafael Walden, called the resolution one-^ided and charged that it gave the Palestinians "carte blanche'' for terrorism.
The 26-member subcom-mission, which reports to the U.N. Human Rights Commission, also condemned South Africa by
affirming past statements that apartheid is a crime against humanity.
But a resolution dealing with Iraqi atrocities against its Kurdish population was shelved by majority vote.
The U.N. disarmament conference meeting here also concluded its final session of the year last week, unable to agree on Israel's request for admission as an observer state.
The Western powers, including Canada are known to want Israel's participation in the discussions.
The Name Game
There is a story in almost every Jevvish surname and Toronto lawyer FRED M. CATZ-MAN has been researching their origias over the-past few years. Mr. Catzman reports oh his research in The CJN.
ZELALACHIN - PLOTKIN
Tim Jackson of Montreal reports that although his father adopted Jackson as his surname (because his given name was Jacob), his grandfather's name was ZELALACHIN.
One of his relatives suggested that it probably refers to SZCZECIW. which is the Polish version of the former German City of STETTIN.
In my opinion, it bears a closer resemblance to ZELECHIN, a village east of LODZ in Poland.
His grandmother was a PLOTKIN. It means fish dealer and derives from the Russian word PLOT-KI Cwhitefish).
