President-elect cleared of discrimination link

The refusal by B'nai Brith Canada's presidentelect to resign because an erhployment agency he co-owns was found to have comiilied with discriminatory job requests is ''a moot point" for now, says BBC president Marilyn Wainberg.
Presidentrelect Frank Wilson was asked to step down by BBC higher-ups in Febniary, but he reftiskl because' 'I am totally innocent, ' ■ he told The CJN last week. "I have not been
charged with anything."
Indeed, in a statement released March 22, the Ontario Human Rights Com-missioh absolved Wilson and the other co-owner of T.E.S. Contract Services Inc., saying there was no evidence the two were personally involved in or sahcr tioned a deliberate discriminatory policy.
However, the commis: sion found that the agency accepted and acted on discriminatory job requests from employers.

It's almost like a fairy tale. Struggling young actress . meets by chance a dashing nobleman, He pursues her, but she initially resists. Then he wins her ilhey-live happily ever after in a castle.
The life of the former Nadine L'Hopitalier does . indeed resemble a story. For the past 31 years, she has been the Baroness de Rothschild, wife of Baron Edmond de Rothschild of France, head of the banking ' and winemaking empire.
The baroness was in Montr'eal and Toronto recently oil behalf of the bank. She also met with some of the leaders of Xaliadiah Hadassah-WIZO. She has been active with its French equivalent, and was chairman of Paris. WIZO for seven years from 1964:
Today, she restricts her work on behalf of WIZO to one or two big events a year, acting as a sort of ambassador for the organization.
Although a frequent traveler, thirwas only de Rothschild's third visit to Montreal: the first being
some 20 years ago for WIZO, the second a few years ago to promote the family wines.
The couple calls home the Chateau Lafitte in Bordeaux, the heart of wine country in southern France. Recently, they purchased another castle in Medoc, called Chateau
, Clarke, founded by an Irishman. They also spend . quite a bit of time in Paris and Israel.
Their son Benjamin, 27, works in the family bank.
De Rothschild said she came.from a very modest background and went to. work as a teenager in a factory before breaking into acting. - ■;'.
Although she has devoted herself primarily to her family and its business, the
'baroness has carved outher own niche as a writer of love stories. Titles include (translated from the French) The Baroness Returns at Five 0'Clock and Speak to Me of Love.
Her next book will be non-fiction, Le Savoir Vivre, which she describes as a manual on "how to succeed in life.'' It will contain tips for women ' 'how to behave, how to be
"seductive, how to be happy." as well as a guide to etiquette and entertaining.
MISSING WOMAN
Yeda "Dede" Rosenthal, 29, formerly of Hamilton, Ont., has been missing since Feb. 26. She is described as 5 feet, 9 inches and weighs about 150 pounds..
"It's funny, but practical," said the baroness, who confided she does most of her writing on airplanes.
Her novels have been translated into a variety of languages, but not English. The reason, she explained, is that her husband is concerned . that American producers would want to make them into movies and she would be on the road for six months doing promotions.
De Rothschild has definite — and very traditional—ideas on a worn--ah's role. .'^^ married woman should be dependent on her husbandt otherwise there is competition. The man should be the boss and the star. You can't have two stars in a marriage."
She believes there would' be fewer divorces if wives made an effort to please their husband. ''Before they are married they please them. The day after, it's finished." — -
This means women must
choose between a demand-: ing career and a husband. Otherwise she is too tired for household chores and taking care of children, and she and her husband become "two solitudes."
If a woman can't abide by this, de Rothschild be lieves she should stay single. "The only positive thing about feminism is that it has made women friends, rather than enemies."
De Rothschild gave up her own career as a film and stage actress (under the name Nadine Tallier), after marrying the baron.—
The baroness' other charitable interests include three homes for troubled children-in France. Many of the 400 residents come from broken or extremely poor homes. ;
She is also now working on a project that would : highlight the contributions Jews have made to mankind in science, medicine, music, literature and other fields, perhaps through the issuing of a commemorative^ stamp ■ issue. ■•■ ":■

"The subject of [Wilson's} resignation is a moot point at this time," Wainberg said. "It's not something we're discussing. He had been asked to resign and he refused. "The [human rights] commission did what they had to do ^We' re pleased they went through the process and that the whole thing is finished."
Wilson said the complaint with the commission was laid by a former employee of Uie agency, and that the commission "found very little" that was at odds -with the province's human rights code.
, Often, employment agencies are asked by clients to find, for example, a "young man" for physically demanding labor, Wilson said. Fulfilling a request like that is against the code, he added.
Commissioners found that T.E.S. complied with requests from employers "in a manner that either directly or indirectly indicated preferences on the basis of prohibited grounds of discrimination."
However, the investigation found "no deliberate policy on the part of the principals of the agency of accepting, dealing with or acting upon discriminatory job requests from clients, and disclosed no evidence
that the principals actively sanctioned,. ratified or approved such activity."
The commission stressed that T.E.S. negotiated in good faith and has committed itself to developing "industry-wide standards." _L
Wilson said his agency will ' 'take a leadership role" by agreeing to:
• develop written policies on handling discriminatory job requests;"
• educate and train employees 'in human rights, race relations and employ-
_ment equity;
• collect data for the com-rnission on job requests;
• report regularly to the commission;
• be audited by the commission to ensure compliance;
•establish a three-year employment equity plan, with goals and timetables, including the elimination of barriers in the recruitment, referral and placement process. '
