to Tel Aviv ^non-stop-on El Al
TORONTO -
Early in the morning^^n Oct. 7, 430 bright-eyed travellers jostled and joked at Pearson International Airport while waiting to board an El A! Airlines jet direct from Toronto to Tel Aviv.
The flight, sold-out and packed tightly with passiingers from Toronto, by-passed it.'yusual feeder flight to Montreal duetto lack of space.
At least three-quarters of the seats were booked by a happy Shalom Even of Shalom K Tours and an excited Emile Aufgang pf Aufgang Travel.
-tn
Also on board was a Temple Sinai delegation led by Rabbi Pearlson and Jackie Kelman. several dozen members of the Beth Sholom Brotherhood under the leadership of Alex Serota, and a huge group from Beth Emeth. escorted by a bevy of past presidents including Harry Turk. Obish Himmel and Barney Barenholtz.
The Israel Government Tourist Office played a role in promotion for these synagogues.
Hustling and bustling though it was, confijsion was kept to a minimum in part due to Even's idea to have an advance check-in on Sunday at Beth Emeth.
In spite of the predictable noise and jocularity, the El Al security team and handling agents at Air Canada did a commendable job. as did Joe Schmidt, new El Al station manager -ifor Ttvonto'and Montreal.
' Looking on at the crowded scene _ was Yehuda Shen, director of the Israel Government Tourist Office. Grinning from ear to ear. Shen said Nothing in the world was going to stop this woman from boarding the simply. "More fun than fundraising, first El Al direct flight from Toronto to Tel Aviv. [Rough Layout photo] isn't it? '

Decision day in the citizenship case of Nazi collaborator Jacob Liiitjens has been pushed back yet again.
War. crimes prosecutors and the defendant himself will have to wait until Oct. 21 to learn when the court's decision will be released. A conference call is scheduled for that day and Associate Chief Justice James Jerome said he is confident the parties will learn at that time when Federal Court Justice Frank CoUier's judgment will be made available to them.
Collier has "ail.but finished his hand-Written notes" and it is only a question of transcribing them into a
form that cjih be published. Jerome told The UN —;
h is likely that a waning period for a translation may be dispensed with to huriythb process along, he added. Jerome is responsible for judicial administration in the Federal Courts.
Federal prosecutors and deffence counsel were told of the new develop^ ments in a conference call last week.
Luitjens is a formercitizen of Holland who was convicted in absentia by a postwar Dutch court for collaborating with the Nazis-.-
After Hying for a time in Paraguay, he moved to Canada in 1961; Prosecutors for the Justice Department's war crimes unit are aittempling to strip him of his citizenship On the basis that he lied about his past when eniermg
the country.
• The move would open the door to deporting him to his native Holland, which has been seeking his extradition for more than 10 years.
A decision in the citizenship case has been awaited since it concluded in May 1989. Since that time, prosecutors and representatives of Jewish - organizations have been upset that a decision has taken so long.
Last week. B'nai Brith Canada and the Simon Wiesenthal Centre (SWC) issued a joint news release cond,emn-ing the; judicial delay and calling for an immediate judgment.
"This lengthy delay is" unacceptable and a moral stain on Canada's judicial system." said Sol Littman. Canadian representative of the SWC.
