Queen Elizabeth II greets Dorothy and Cyril Reitman of Montreal at a reception in St. Jdmes's Palace.
LONDON — Queen: Elizabeth II and Prince Philip received members of the Commohwealth Jewish Council at St. James's Palace for a kosher reception during a recent Council conference here. King Constantine and Queen Anna Marie of Greece also played host.
"She was very animated and very attractive in p>er-son," said Dorothy Reitman of Montreal, chair of the Coiincil's Canadian committee. . Apprdximately 30 members of the Council attended the reception, as well as members of the London Jewish community. Reitman said that as they entered the palace, an orchestra composed of young British Jews played Yerushalayim She! Zahdv.
British Labor MP and Council president Greville Jan-ner jokingly asked the Queen if her crown was very heavy, Reitman said. "She said it weighs four pounds, like having a salmon on your head."
Jewish continuity was the theme of the three^iay conference which brought together representatives of Jewish communities in Hong Kong, Jersey, Kenya, Malta, New Zealandj Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, Zambia and Zimbabwe,
' 'Great concern was expressed by the delegates as to the increasing rate of intermarriage and it was agreed that combatting this disturbing dynamic must be a focus of Jewish communal activities," Reitman said.
In its resolutions, the Council welcomed the normalization of diplomatic relations between Israel and Zimbabwe, and called upon other Commonwealth nations to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel immediately.
The conference urged the British government to grant the right of residence in the U.K. to Hong Kong citizens who will not be granted Chinese citizenship after 1997.
Delegates were also concerned by the resurgence of right-wing extremism in Germany and what they termed official attempts to erase the miemory of crimes perpetrated during the Hitler p)ei-i6d. They called on the German authorities to promote and support all efforts to perpetuate the niiemory of Nazi atrocities and of the Holocaust.
The Council's 1993 award was presented to Walter
Hirsh, former New Zealand race relations concilliator and human rights commissioner.
The 1995 biennial conference is scheduled to take place iri New Delhi, India.
Other Canadians attending the conference were Marsha and Edward Bronfman, Linda and Gary Goldberg, Marvelle and Murray Kdffler, Jill and Joel Reitman, all of Toronto; and Lilly and Paul Ivanier of Montreal.

There is a Story in almost every Jewish surname and Toronto lawyer FRED M. CAtZMAN has been researching their origins oyer the past few years. Mr Catzman reports on his research in The CJN.
■ BLiTZER
Wolf Blitzer became.well known throughout the world for his commentary for CNN during the Persian Gulf War. The name appeared to be related to Donner and Blit-zen. thunder and lightning in German. While this may better characteiize his delivery, I have concluded that the origin of his surname is less illuminating. I trace it to Bel't-sy. a district centre in Bessarabia.
One of Toronto's pioneer chartered accountants was the late Moses Ratney, a big man with a big heart who vl'as a leader in B'nai B'rith. ■
The name probably derives from the village lafRatni (near Radom) or less likely from Ratno.(Jncar Kovel).
I regret that 1 did not ask him while he was alive.
