JERUSALEM (JTA) -
A wild car chase in the Gaza Strip, with firebombs exploding between an Arab vehicle and pursuing Israeli border police, was part of a train of events that left at least four Palestinians dead last week and anywhere from 10 to 30 injured.
Israeli and Palestinian sources gave different versions of the incident, which began in Rafah, at the southern end of the territory, near the Egyptian border, and ended with a general curfew clamp^ on the town.
According to the Israel Defence Force, a hand grenade was thrown from a car at a military post in Rafah.
No one was hurt, but border police who recognized the vehicle gave chase in a jeep through the town's streets.
According to the IDF, the fleeing Arabs ran over three local residents and threw several gasoline bombs at the jeep. One set it ablaze, but the occupants escaped and opened fire on the fugitives, reportedly killing two of them.
At that point, riots broke out, in which one border policeman was slightly hurt.
It was not immediately clear whether all of the occupants of the fleeing vehicle \yere apprehended.
Four bodies ^yere brought to a local hospital, along with 10 wounded. Arab sources reported 30 people injured.
Palestinian sources said border police chasing the activists opened fire on a crowd that surrounded their jeep in the marketplace of a Rafah reftigee camp, killing at least three.
More fatalities occurred when clashes spread to other parts of the camp, the sources said.
