Filer award recognizes service
TORONTO -
The presentation at the Canadian Jewish Congress Plenary of the Sam Filer Distinguished Service award to Gladys Rose of Saskatoon and Herb Rosenfeld of Toronto marked a milestone in three lives.
For Rose and Rosenfeld, the award, designed by Toronto artist Howard Fox, recognized decades of service in three very different Canadian communities.
And forjudge Sam Filer, said his \yife Toni Silberman, "It is a day for giving and for thanksgiving."
Filer, who serves on Ontario's Court of Justice, has amytrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease). When the award was inaugurated at die 1989 plenary in Montreal, he was unable to attend.
Silberman paid tribute to Filer's family and friends — "and members of Congress are our family," she added. , "Without your support he would not
be here today."
In presenting the awards, Silberman noted that the criteria are extensive. Recipients must have demonstrated continued leadership of an exemplary nature, with no small degree of self-sacrifice.
Of Gladys Rose, Silberman said: "There is very little in Saskatchewan that has not been touched by her efforts."
Rose has served as chairman of CJC Saskatchewan region since 1986. She has been involved in the Saskatoon community as president of the Saskatoon section of National Council of Jewish Women, chairman of the board of Saskatoon Region Community College, director of the oral history project on Jews in Saskatchewan, and as a founder of Multi-Faith Saskatoon.
Rosenfeld, Silberman said, "honors the criteria for the award."
He has just completed three years as chairman of the National Budget-
ing Conference of Canadian Jewry; during his term with NBC, he was also a vice-president of the Council of Jewish Federations of North America. He has served as president of Toronto Jewish Congress (now Jewish Federation of Greater Toronto) and Jewish Immigrant Aid Services at both the Quebec and national level.
Presently an officer of Canadian Jewish Congress and a director of United Israel Appeal of Canada, Rosenfeld has also been an officer and board member of the Canada-Israel Committee and Allied Jewish Community Services of Montreal.
Both Rose and Rosenfeld have served "not oiit of obligation but out of love for their community," Silberman concluded.
Filer, currently an officer of CJC Ontario region, has held numerous Congress positions, including regional chairman and chairman of the national executive.
