TEL AVIV, (JCNS) — General Moshe Daym, a former Israeli CSiief of Staff and now Minigter of Agricul^aie, caused 3 sensation in Petah Ilgva Court by refusing to take the oatb on the Bible handed to him.
Tbe Genenl, who has only one eye, noticed that the first 35 pages were missing from the book. When the jndge tried to admonish the General, who was appearing on the charge in connection with a road accident, he interjected:
"You had better take care that the Bible kept here is conytlete".
The judge wn obvionsly embarrassed bat he had the last word — he found the General ^nilfy.

COmONWlALTH CHIEF RABBI BRODW CRITICim RA0INICAL ELECTION POLITICS IN ISRAEL
THREAT TO ELECT "INDEPENDENT RABBINATE COUNCIL"
LONDON (JCNS) — Britain's (3hlef Rabbi, Dr. Israel Brodie — who is leaving for Israel on December 20 — expressed his concern at the way In which the prcxsass of electing a new Caiief Rabbi of Israel is being approached.
Dr. Brodie was speaking at a dinner given in his honour by the Friends of the Bar-Ilan University, at tlie Brent Bridge Hotel, Lond<Bi.
He said he feared that those charged with the taaJro^ftoding
a successor to Dr. Herzog were overcome by political and ideological considerations held with great passion and obstinacy. . He had come to the conclusion, said Rabbi Brodie. that a nvOTiber of the contentious issues which divided the people of Israel today arose from the fact that the approach to those problems was not the right one. That approach should be one of reverence and due regard to the solemnity and gravity of the procedures in which they were about to engage.
The primary purpose of the C!hlef Rabbi's visit to Israel, together With Mrs. JBrodie, is to bie iweseot at the
of the Oiair of Education which is being named for him at the Bar-Ilmi University.
TEL AVrV (JCNS) - Tlip dispute between Mapai and the National Religious Party over the Chief Rabbinate elections reached its climax last week when over 400 rabbis, including Government officials, attended an emergency rally in protest against Mapai's intentions to appoint "their rabbis".
The rally, which was held at the Great Synagogue, heard messages of encouragement received from Chief Rabbi Dr. Israel Brodie, from Chief Rabbi Dr. lnauguratloaJ.O^«*.Jte©laa..;fi£:"^ «at
many other messages from Israel and abroad.
AGUDAH MEMBERS
PRESENT ^
Some surprise was caused when i it was noticed that rabbis belong-! ing to the Agudai Israel, headed by Knesset member Rabbi Kal-man Kahaha, were present at the meeting. The most, impressive figure was that of Chief Rabbi Nissim, who when he rose to speak was given an ovation by the rabbis.
The rally decided that the Rab-i bi'nate's president, Rabbi Nissim. i other rabbinate members.
until new fair elections were held. It also decided that as long as the Rabbinate is unwilling to participate at the elections, no rabbi should take part in them, either as candidate or as elector.
ULTIMATUM BY
NISSIM
Chief Rabbi Nissim, who made the principal speech, warned that Israeli rabbis would form an independent Rabbinate if the Government continued to impose what he called "impossltrie conations". '

IS THE RABBI THA T NAIVE ?
THE CANADIAN JEWISH NEWS reprints in this issue on important statement compiled by the editors of the world's leading liberol newspaper. The Manchester Guar-dioii. It deals with the problem of armament of the NATO countries. The Manchester Guardian has been in the forefront of the newspapers advocating co-existence with Russia. Yet it stresses the necessity of arming the NATO countries with nuclear weopons.
I suggest that Rabbi Abraham Feinberg reod this Orticle in today's CANADIAN JEWISH NEWS. Hod the eminent rabbi pondered upon this problem prior to the rneeting at the Eaton Auditorium lost Thursday, he might have resigned as chairman of that pathetic Toronto Committee for Nuclear Disarmament * ■ * ■ «
It is ridiculous -r- and dangerous — to propagdte the idea that we, of the West, should disarm unilaterally while the Kremlin or its Chinese Big Brother continues to odvance in the field of modern arms.
I pisp recommend to Rabbi Feinberg thot he reod the full text of the last Communist Manifesto os released on December 6th by the Soviet News Agency, Toss. It is the text of the statement adopted for publication by the leaders of eighty one Comrnunist parties, following their summit • rneeting in Moscow.
This Manifesto contains thousands of words which Rabbi Feinberg should study diligently if - he proposes to bring obbut peace with Russia, and believes that "you con tmst Russio OS much ps you con trust any other nation". In cose Dr. Feinberg missed that important document, may I quote one porogroph:
"Communists may seize power by peaceful or non-peocieful mcons, depehding upon local circumstances.'^ *... * • ■
_l do not doubt the~integrity and sincerity of Rabbi Feinberg. However, may I remind'him that, in the ddyi__ when Hitler wos preparing for war, the Nazi dictator talked ofTpeoce? Each "surprise" — whether is was the Rhinelond coup or the ossossinotion of Dolfuss-—^ wos olwoys followed by aldose of peace and on oppegi for o "surnmit conference". Perhops Russia is as good and os-peoceful as. Rabbi Feinbcrg's Committee claims. But we con, only judge by its record. So long as Russia is menu- , focturing nuclear weopons, it would be criminal folly for us to disarm.
There is o famous anecdote obout.o Russiari who orgues with on American on the relative freedom, in their respiective countries, the American tells the Russion that he-could-stand right in front of the White House, yell "Down with the president of the -United States" ond get owoy with it. To which the Russion replies, "So, what? I, too, con stand in iFront of the Krerrilin, yell 'Down with the American president' and nothing would hoppen to
me.
The doy I redd in Isvettio or Pravda that, Rdbbi Fein-berg's Toronto Comriiittceifor Nuclear Disormornent has held o meeting in^^^Moscovv^ at which o resolution wos possed asking thej Soviet Union ond the WarsaW-Poet^ notions to disarm, V wjll betieve^^ that Russia is o country in which the politicalclimote is similar to the one prevailing in North America, and that its rulers should be trusted OS much os Ihe'leoders-of the Western democro-

COMMUNISTS SUSPECT ISRAEL
LONDON — IW.J.A.) Allegations that "certain Israeli ruling circles are not interested, in disclosing all the crimes which Eich mann committed, for this would incriminate people who now occupy important pc»ts in Western Germany", were made ina YidV dish language broadcast of Bucharest radio.
The broadcast referred to charges said to have been made by T. Friedmann, Director of the Haifa Centre for Documentation of Nazi Crimes, that, "official Israeli circles .were hampering his efforts to expose the crimes of the Hitlerite murderers of the Jews". Friedmann is quoted as sayng that the Israeli authorities were tryrtg to prevent publication in the U.S. of his book describing his efforts to track down Nazi war criminals, but that the book would nevertheless be published in the near future.

Jerusalem, (JCNS) — After several meetings during the lost weeks with Dr. Nahum GGldmonn, Mr. Levi Eshkol acting as mediator, Mr. David Ben-Gurion hds finally agreed to submit to the Jewish Agency Executive's ultimatum, that hie could only be permitted to address the Zionist Congress as Prime Minister, if he would abstain from ottacking the Zionist Movement.
Mr. Ben-Gurion will thus give the mqjor address entitled "The State of Israel and the Jewish People" on the morning of the second day of the Congress, and will devote his remarks to the necessity of Aliya and Jewish education in the Diaspora.
The Prime Minister conferred agoin Tuesday with Dr. Goldmann to discuss the contents of his speech.

Mr. Ben-Gu* rion's recent remorfct are said to hove irritated Dr. Goldmann who is now anxious to know whether tome sort of co-operation between the Government and the Zionist Organisation is still possible. If luch co-openition was found to be unpracticable due to Mr. Ben-. Gurion's stand, then he will be determined to resign his post.
Ben-Gurion's sharp attacks stem from his dissotisiFaction with the reluctance of Zionists, especially in the U.S., to step up drives fo persuade Jews to emigrate to Israel.
He told newsmen that prospects >f increased Western immigration #ere promising "if there was no interference from the Zionist movement."

REVIVAL OF YIDDISH POPULAR MUSIC
London. (JCNS) — The Yiddish Concert season began again in Moscow and in several of the larger towns in the'U«".S.R. In Moscow the most popular of the composers who have writ-ter the music for Jewish folk songs are Zinovi. Konipanietz, Leib Yampolski, Rivka Boyarka-ya and Pesach Dubrov.- Among the younger Russian Jews who have composed music to Yiddish folk songs is also Moshe Weinberg, a son-in-law of the late Solomon Mlchoels, the famous Jewish dramatic actor who disappeared in unknown circurh-stances in Stalin's day, and is now believed to have been deliberately murdered during a visit to Riga.
