Canadian Panorama
BY MORDECAI HIRSHENSON
Municipol Miscetlany
• Philip Givens, recently elected to the Board of Control, is Toronto's first Jewish controller since 1923. His predecessor was Joseph Singer who now practises ISw with his son Vernon Singer M.P.P.
• -Sam Berger, president of the Big Four Football Union was da feated in his bid for Ottawa's mayoralty by social worker Dr. Charlotte Whitton. Berger used to be president of the Ottawa Va'ad Ha'lr (Jewish Community Council).
• The Nobleman who was a successful candidate for Scar-boro's school board is not the Ben Nobleman, York Township's (and Toronto's) political stormy petrel.
• Saul Cowan, school trustee for North York's Lawrence Mrnor area had no announced opponent until nomination day v.v.sn, a bare two weeks before ballJiting, Paul Glastman appeared as a candidate. Cowan who had anticipated an acclam ation, had to quickly organize a campaign giving his printers rush orders for placards and signs. He romped in with an easy victory. Saul is offiCe manager for an c<l firm. His brother Is Norman Cowan, well known group insurance executive.
• Fifteen of the members elected to the various municipal bodies within Metro Toronto are Jews, ranging in seniority from
year old Nathan Phillips to 30 year old noWce, David Roten-berg, new alderman. Ward 4.
• Peter K. Draimin, re-elected as school trustee in Forest Hill Village, comes by his public service through his family background. His grandfather, the late Charles King, was a school trustee in Whitby for 25 years. King, a Bohemian-bom tanner who settled in Whitby in 1863, occupied every office in the town Including the mayoralty. In 1888 he was Warden of Ontario county. Needless to say the middle Initial in P. K, Draimin stands for "King",
Bryant Kasslrer, Toronto barrister, who had a chance of gaining membership in the North York Board of Education, was defeated in his ward which com-prised Don Mills and the surrounding area (in the Don Mills section proper, incidentally, he gained a ihajority support). A campaign to defeat him was led by several clergymen who made use of the reUglous education questioii as an election issue. The Keverend D. F. Collier, a Presby-terian clergyman, had a coffee party at hi^ home for Robin Ha-rel, Kasslrer's opponent, and accompanied Hazel on all his public appearances. The Rev, Mr. Bumside of Sloan Avenue Uni-{ted Church preached a sermon ^irging that voters put In a can didate pledged to retain religion In the schools, and an AngUcan divine, Mr. Thomson, sermonized on the church's traditional primacy and leadership in education.
of finance and Its power. Sir Beverley is,far from being antlse-mitic In so spying—he bears the Jews no ill-.will for their skill In this field of enterprise; after all he writies In the pages of a financial organ.
Recently In his weekly column from London in Toronto's Financial Post he commented with some distaste on the hoodlums who pelted the new Lord Mayor's coach with firecrackers shouting anti-Jewish slogans aX It. Says Sir Beverley:
"The mayor-elect. Sir Ber-nard Waley-(3ohen, took it all in apparent good humour, but he would be more than himian If he did not feel deeply hurt by the boorishness of the whole thing.
Sir Bernard Is by no means a stranger to controversy but he is a man of the utmost Integrity. He is not the first Jewish citizen to become Lord Mayor, and indeed It
>wouId be odd If it were so. The oitjr is the very center of fihanoe and trading, and it would be strange indeed if Jews were refused the Lord Mayor's robes In the area where finance is supreme."
Government will bar Houiing Discrimination
David Walker M. P. for Toroo-to-Bosedale and Kfinlster of Works announced in the House of Commons last week that his department has Inserted a regulatioo Into the Natiooal Housing Act that will outlaw racial and re* llglous discrimination in govetih ment^sldlzed housing l.e. all NHA homes. This marks the cu^ mlnatlon of a long effort led by the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Labour Human Rights o(Hnmlttees to ban bias in at least that area of housing where govemmoit funds or credit are used.

"Holiday in Japan"
by Borbora I. Pearl
We spent an ordinary evening at the O'Keefe C^entre last week. The performance was Steve Parker's Holiday in Japan, starring Izumi Yuklmura and James Bor-ges.
This entire production, staged and choreographed by Paul God-kin, was one, big revue. A bucketful of musical skits, Holiday in Japan was originally meant for
a night club audience. In a place ' Zionist Organization of Canada like the O'Keefe Center, hoW' ever, the show was too tepid.
Izuml Yuklmura, the twenty-three-year-old star, did the best she could. Unfortunately her renditions had no body.
Trying to bring together East and West became a bit tiring. What kept us awake were the old, familiar , Nagasaki, Poor Butterfly, Swanee.
