the later stages of the BiUi the argument being that this should be dealt with by education and not by legislation.
Mr. Brockway said there had beeii a remarkable growth of support for his measiue and those supporting him In the introduction of the Bill were draym from all three parties in the House.
The Bill would prohibit racial discrimination in licensed common lodging houses, restaurants, and places where food and drink wer« sold to the pubUc. It would prohibit it in dance halls. The Bill would also include a clause which would prohibit refusal of a lease for accommodation or make any clause in existing leas« invalid if they reflected discrimination on grounds of race, colour, or religion.
The Bill, said Mr. Brockway, was restricted, but it was important for two reasons. Firstly it would set a moral pattern for the nations which would assuredly influence attitudes and practices in wider spheres, and secondly it would witness to the world and particularly to the peoples of the newly-emerging nations the acceptance by Britain of the principle of racial and human equality.
The Bill was given a first reading.
