104 Canadians Seftled In Israel
MONTREAL, (CJN). — Tlie Aliyah Department of the United Zionist Council disclosed that 104 Canadians went to Israel during 1960. These Included scten-tistfi, technologists, skilled artisans, chalutzim. and retired persons. Considerable interest has been shown by retired persons in aliyah now that the Government permits the old age pension to be paid outside Canada. The office notes that of'the 140 persons who went, a large num-; ber were in the professional or , skilled category-, or were small i investors. In a number of cases, parents and even grandparents, I went on aliyah in order to join their children who are now happily settled in the countrj-.
Canadians are in great demand In Israel, especially those in the professional or skilled categories. Kibbutzim are in many c^es prepared to take families even ,
if the breadwinner is not skilled. : The Jewish Agency has now extended the scope of its assist^ ance to immigrants, such assistance including ulpanlm (free lan-:guagi; schools), transportation loans, shipping loans, and mortgages for housing, etc. The of-, fices at 2025 University St., Monl-, real, and at 651 Spadina Ave., Toronto, are able to give prospective immigrants every pos-, sible assistance, free of cliarge and in complete confidence. : There are now some 1,600 Canadian immigrants in Israel who are making a positive contribution to'the development of the countrj' in almost everj' sphere of activity. They are greatly assisted by the Association of Americans and Canadians in Israel, which helps to integrate newcomers into the' country and keeps them in touch with their fellow Canadians.
TORONTONIANS CONFER ON AID
BID TO RESTORE SANHEDRIM
JERUSALEM, (JCNS) - Mr. Moshe Kol (Progressive) has given notice In the Knesset that he will introduce a Private Members Bill for the restoration of the Sanhedrin.
Mr. Kol complained that the IsraeU Chief Rabbis had not done enough to enable Halakha to cope with problems created by statehood.
He was speaking on the Bill postponing the Chief Rabbinate elections for ten months which was passed with only Achdut Avoda opposing;
The debate revealed gaps in the agreement between Mapal and the National-Religious Party, which had led to general acceptance of the postponement. A Mapai spokesman, Mr. Israel Yeshayahu, declared that he saw »fr,i eal need- for -the-BiH ^v.<c IwivV ed to the National Religious Party's strong feelings on the fcubject.
Postponing the elections was "irrational and arbitrary", he •aid, and the party was delibe-
rately crearing confusion and havoc.
I Replying, Mr. B. Chalior, of the National Religious Party, gave a list of "machinations and ; conspiracies" carried out by Ma-' pal, 'le declared, in a bid to , predetermine the election result.

TOYNBEE INSULTS HISTOIIY
"....What is the meaning of history for the soul?...." . (Toynbee in "Civilization on Trial".)
It to fortanate for the world that, with the exception •r old Julins Caesar historians merely WRITE history. For where, indeed, would we.be if a great historian, » profonnd philosopher of history such as Dr. Toynbee ■lade history instead of interpreted it?
Many are profoundly shocked by the sUtement Dr. Toynbee made In MontreaL Addressing a Jewish forum at the Hillel Students' House, the Brit^ historian stated:
"...The IdlUng of Arab civilians by IsraeU forces durinj the 1948 Palestine war (can be) compared In moral quality with what the Germans did."
• • *
Thou^ this statement both shocks and disturbs me, I cannot understand why Dr. Yaacov Herzbg, the Israeli Ambassador, took the trouble to debate with one so revoltlngly biased. Dr. Herzog requested the debate after reading Dr. Toynbee's first remark wherein the British scholar dared compare Israelis to Nads.' There, are people with whom it is futile to argue. Dr. Toynbee is outstanding among them. For it is obvious that he is not objective. In fact, a strong suspicion is evident: in whose behalf does he destroy history? -
Toynbee taiows it is an insult to oiie's heart and mind to compare the Jews who were forced to escape Destination = Auschwiti with the most perverted maniacs. In fact semantics has as yet to discover or coin a word which would describe the "moral quality of what the Germans . did."
Dr. Toynbee overlooked one minor detail: while the Nazis mobilized the (Germans for world conquest and destruction of human life, the Zionists organized Jews to
^rebuild a desolate country and to live peacefully _with their neighbours. The Jews of Palestine NEVER declared war on the Arabs. It was the ARAB NATIONS whd htvaded the State of Israd.— _
—-Next to Hebrew,—Arabjc-ir-one of the^two . official lang:uage8 in^srael. The Israelis created Arabic schooU for^the Arab minority.: Is there one sane, person in the world vrho can accept Toynbee's-parailel between ,HitIer'« blbbd-thirsijr wars and the Jewish effort to rebuild Palestine? What was, then, the purpose behind Dr. Herzog'a decision to debate with Dr. Toynbee after such com-
;;parison?' '

"Hie Rabbis of the Talmud'tell us that the biblical Balaam was greater tbaii Moses. They stressed the fact tiut Balaam, who wrote the most glorious pages in. the Bible about Jews —'"how beautiful are thy tents, O Jacob" — has no sharein^ the world to come. Such ia the statement of the Talmud in the tractate Sanhedriri. One commentator explained thus: because BaUain, knowing tlie truth about Israel and being capable of composing the most subUme verses ever to be written in recorded histoiy concerning Jews, sold himself to Baiak.. What does Balaam Toynbee want with his isubservience to the Balaks of the Near East? RABBIS COMPLAIN
ABOUT POST-MORTEM
Jerusalem. (JCNS^ There have been complaints from- religious circles that Israeli doctors are "scalpel-happy"' and dissect corpses without a good medicftl reason, thus, disrespecting bolii the families' wishes and the precepts of the Torah. . Particular hostility has been cau.sed in the Orthodox coninmnity by a postmortem whicii was carried Out recently on a leading Sephiirdi
rabbi, the brother of Rabbi Nis-Sim.
Following reports about "obscur-
lantist clerics" who wish to prevent; ] the progress of medical science, i j the Hadassah Medical Organi- i j zatlon has been holding nleeting.^ I with prominent rabbis. The pur-! pose, of their talks is to define I more clearly the law which per-j mits doctors, to carry out post j mortems when the interests of I public health are involved. Citing constitutional provisions in the Soviet Union which guarantee freedom "for all peoples regardless of race" make 'manifestations of racial and reUgious hatred" punishable by- law, Mr. Sapozhnikov said: "Jews, like all other nationalities, enjoy all political, social, and cultural rights In the Soviet Union, just as all other nationalities enjoy these rights." The Soviet delegate, howe^-er, evaded an answer to the charges that Jewish cultural life is being suppressed in the Soviet Union and that Soviet newspapers are indulging in vast anti-Jewish propaganda, two of the main accusations levelled by the. Jewish, organisations against Moscow.
