A NEW CONCEPT IN BOXING PROMOTION
By BRUCE RICHARDSON
In Miami Beach's Convention Hall on Monday night March 13, Floyd Patterson and Ingemar Johansson will clash in their third world heavyweight championship match.
In Canada and the U.S. closed circuit television viewers wiU see a new concept in boiing pro-mo^oh. Promoters Bill Fagazy and Roy Ck)hn, partners in Fea^ tnre Sports inc., after deliberating between Los Angeles'collise-ntBy. seating over 100,000, and Miami's. Orange Bowl with close to 80,000 seats, finally chose Convention Hall witha^ seating capacity of only"l7,0D0, as their site for the promotion. Why were these huge arenas bypassed for the mach smaller, indoor Convention Hall?
In staging this colossal fistic extravaganza at the peak of the Florida vacation season, Fugazy and Ck)hn are aiming for the per-fe:t boxing promotion. With the fight staged indoors they will not . have to gamble with the vagaries of the weather. And the smaller seating capacity will eliminate , the expenses and concern of crowd control. The prices are scaled to cater to the highest type of patron in boxing history. The ticlcet sale is planned . to exact a gate comparable to the larger arenas with their smaller price scales. There are 7,000 seats 8t $100 each, 3,000 seats at $50 each and 7,000 seats at $20. A sellout would be $99,000. Every one will have a good view and every facility for the comfort of the patrons will be offered.
Featnre Sports Inc. is guaranteed $400,000 for the promotion by wealthy Miami sportsman Bill McDonald, TelePrompter Mogul. Irving kabn has guaranteed the promoters $800,000 for the closed circuit theatre rights.
With all medias, included, a gross rate of nearly five million dollars has been predicted. This could be the most successful box-tog promotion ever.
This success could very w.ell include thd most sensational -heavyweight championship bout of all time. Before their first bout on June 26, 1959, it was this writer's opinion that Floyd Patterson was a poorly managed cshampion who had yet to prove his fighting abUity.
After considering Johansson's record with wins over acknowledged topnotcli fighters: he had K.O.'d Germany's Hein Ten Hoff in one round, Franco Cavicchi lor the European title in 31 rounds, British Empire Champion Henry Cooper in 5, England's Joe Erskine in 13, Germany's Heinz Neuhaus in 4 and Eddie Machen, winner of 24 coh-•ecutive wins against U.S. opponents, In one round, I was not ■orprised that he conquered Patterson so convincingly.
In their second bout, June 20, 1960, I didn't take into cognisance Patterson's deep pride in his fistic ability and in holding the world title. He went into seclusion. Some said he was brooding and that he had become an introvert in his shame of losing the "golden grail" of boxing. In reality he was licking his wounds like a wounded tiger, and planning dire revenge by honing his weapons to become the fighter he bad never been before.
He emerged from Ms self-appointed Elba a mature man, a more confident, stronger, heavier warrior and exacted his revenge in four fierce rounds.
Now it is Johansson who works grimly in seclusion, sharpening his skills. Johansson is a tiiinker. He realizes his failings in defeat
and is working diligently, determined to, recapture the title. He has. always Insisted that his left hook is nearly as devastating as
his right. ■
With the aid of t<^ trainer Whitey Bimstein, he has put aside his bizarre methods of train ing. No longer does he pamper his sparring partners. They earn their money as the former playboy pummels them savagely and
trainer Bimstein has already had to order a frefsh batch from up north. Studying movies of his inglorious defeat and daily sparring sessions, he cooly corrects his mistakes. He declares that 'my left hand will be much better and 111 have more speed".
The big Swede grimli/ vows, "this time.it will be a'different fight".
Patterson can hardly improve on his magnificent performance in their last fight, meanwhile the "Hammer of Thor" is training in deadly earnest.
