BRENDAN BEHAN
By Ben Nobleman
TOO FAR
Irish playwright Brendan Behan ^has gone too far In trying to ^live up to his newspaper reputation of being a common drunk and a charactei-. True It raised him from an obscure writer In Ireland to a guest on the Jack Paar Show and Broadway. But It gets boring to read ibout Behan on the front-pages of Toronto newspapers as creating a disturbance in a hotel lobby at 4 ajn. and being arrested for drunken brawling. George Bernard Shaw and Sean O'Casey dldnt have to do that to achieve fame. Such behaviour is notoriety and in poor taste.
The newspapers may have created a Frankenstein in bulM-Ing up Behan's drunkeness. He may soon believe his own press clippings and end up belonging to Alcoholics Anonymous. Soon any writing talent may disappear for a foggy brain seldom produced good plays.
The disturbing feature of all this is the undue amount of space devoted to Behan In the Toronto papers. As Nathan Cohen pointed out In his Toronto Star column, Impulse, the Jazz show at the OTCeefe Centre featuring Behan as a sort of M.C„ was "incoherent, aimless and tedious". Behan was supposed to provide a script for the show, according to producer Alexander Cohen. But he didn't find the Hme to do so. He also missed the matinee performance on Tuesday and as a result was fired. If Behan isn't careful he may end up a flash In the pan.
The interesting part of all this Is the rush certain local TV shows put on to have Brendan Behan on as a guest. He didn't show to good advantage on either Fighting Words or Better Late. He rambled on about Irrelevant topics and often couldn't be understood. i
But the powerful medfii of the American press and television was enough to make Behan a desireable guest. If he was a native Canadian he wouldn't get to first base. There are dozens of talented Canadian writers, poets, artists, actors who can't fet two lines of publicity in the press. But as soon as they're accepted -in the United States, there's e mad rush by local columnists and " televish commentators to Interview them. Lou Jacobl, Monty Hall, Arthur Killer, Joan Fairfax, Wayne and Shuster, Gisele MacKenzie, to name a few, are typical examples of this Inferiority complex.
The unforttmate situation Is that nothing can change it. It took 10 years before officials of the Canadian National Exhibition decided to abandon their "American headliner" policy.
Anyone who dared criticize this policy, the writer included, was labelled as a heretic and nationalist. . But after two successful flops at the box-office with George Gobel and Phil Silvers, the CNK brass finally have seen the light. Meanwhile hundreds of talented Canadians have been denied the opportunity to appear at the CNE because of this inane policy perpetiiated the past 10 years.
"There are. none so blind as those who will not see". The officials In charge of the CBC, private-television, the CNE and all other entertainment media should make the strongest efforts to discover, promote and develop Canadian talent. There are numerous talented artists working at menial jobs praying for the break that never comes. The Star and Telegram are giving Canadian actors and singers deserved publicity in their weekend entertainment pages and deserve praise for this innovation. All we need now is a few Jack Pasrs to discover the Canadian counterparts of Shelley Berman, Joey Bishop, Phil Ford and Mlml
Hines, Jonathan Winters, Go-nevieve, Charley Weaver, Dbdy Goodman and. many others. PRIVATE TV NETWORK TO BE REAUIT
Discussions held last week In Toronto between representatives of eight; private TV stations, including CFTO-TV, Toronto Indicate that a second TV network will be a reality this fall. Thus after eight years -of monopoly, the CBC win finally have badly-needed coinpetltion. In television as In private business competition Is the llfeblood of the free enterprise system. It Improves and stimulates business.
Thiu far with the CBC being the only TV outlet in the major cities. It often tended to become smug and complacent. Bad shows did not result In reprimand of those In charge. Also to a large extent the CBC Is part of the civil service and experience in show business was not a prerequisite for obtaining employment at the CBC. Personal friendship was often sufficient. Governments come and go and the CBC changes little. The best sinecure for a young fellow Just out of school
is to get a job at the CBC. For no One has been fired there since 1942.
Spence Caldwell will be president, of the new network and CPTO will be the key station. Its to be hoped that rivalry between the two networks will not be taken out on the artists. For It has been rumored that certain show people who have appeared on CFTO have been cancelled from appearing on the CBC. Talent is talent, regardless of who uses It. There is no room for pettinessj^ viridlctlveness or grudges in television. No one. should be backlisted at the CBC, whidi-stlll is the richer the two because of an $80,000,000 annual grant from Parliament, because they have appeared on CPTO. Newspaper critics, regardless of the pohticai orientation of their newspapers, should give equal coverage to shows of both the CBC and CFTO. No artist should be forced to take sides as in the Jack PaarEd Sullivan feud. A private TV network can be a boon to Canadian show business If It creates new jobs and gives an outlet,to Canadian talent.

MAPAI FOR QUIET ELECTORAL CAMI^AIGN
HAIFA, (JCNS) — The first major step toward the effective opening of Mapal's electionis campaign, by giving new directives on the Party's electoral policy, was taken here by Mr. Joseph Alipogl, Mapai Secretary, at a meeting with representatives of Workiers' committees,
Mr. Almogi stated that Mapal has decided to wage a quiet electoral campaign without noise, or. loudspeakers, because It had the duty of clearing the air of hatred resulting from this "Lavon affair."
He predicted that Mapal would yet surprise its opponents. He then welcomed the formation of the new Liberal Party, but said that elections were decided over a matter It was criminsil to have Inflated to th^ proportions of causing th« Oovenunenfi reslg-natloo.
ISRAEL DENIAL
TEL AVIV;. 'JCNS) — Of fecial Israeli sources denied that any Israeli was sent to Argentina to track down Dr. Josef Mengele, the foriner Auschwitz camp doctor,
Following fantastic reports from Buenos Aires on this subject a Foreign Ministry spokesman stated that this woman, Nu-rith Eldad (n6e Danziger) an Israeli divorcee left Israel for Argentina in December, 1959, to visit relatives, and had remained there. She had no connection with any official Israeli body.
After her death, the Argentine authorities informed the Israel Embassy accordingly.
Mrs. Eldad was bom in Franks furtam-Maln but possessed an Israeli passport. It Is not yet known if her relatives would prefer her remains to be transferred to IsraeL

AID TO NEW COUNTRIES
Mrs. Meir then announced that the medical school of the Hebrew University is to open a special five-year course to train doctors from underdeveloped countries, and the Institute of Technology in Haifa is introducing a four-year course for agricultural engineers.
The pace of Israeli technical aid for new countries, she said, has been speeded iip, and the number of trainees to receive courses here will reach 1,000 this year, while the number of Israel experts sent abroad will reach 400. She contrasted Israel's operations In Africa with those of the U«A.R. which were designed solely to Increase Its Influence.
To that effect, went on Mrs. MeIr, the U.A.R. was using Islam as an Instrument for political power. "A niew radio station 'The Voice of Islam! is being built to bring Egyptian gospel to Moslems all over the world, especially In Africa;."

LAVON FI'ROR DIMS EICHMANN'S TRIAL
JERUSALEM - With elecUons looming, Israel faces the uncomfortable prospect that b renewed debate over the Lavon affair will corincide with the Eichmann trial.
Th« tum of events has been particularly distressing to the Ben-Qu'rlon Government, which wants as much imdivlded attention as possible to fall on the trial of the former Nazi.
Adolf Elchmann's trial, an charges of having devised the systematic murder of millions of Jews during World War n, Is scheduliBd to open here April 11 in a courtroom constructed for the event.
But the Lavon affair has also captured the public Interest and has driven pollUcal .parties to take stands that have made it Impossible for them so far to form a new Grovemment.
Discussing the expenditure of her Ministry's budget of Just under I£20 million, Mrs. Meir said that Israel maintains today diplomatic or consular missions in more than 70 countries. In fact, she said, Israel was now represented in all countries which are members of the United Nations, except for the Arab cotm-tries and three' other countries which are influenced by the Arabs In their attitude to Israel.
If Israel is not represented In some countries, this was because of a lack of means, but it was the shortage of manpower which had last year been felt w'th special urgency. Israel's foreign re!atlons were In fact growing in content as well as In dimension. A special Department in the Foreign Ministry has been set up fbr International cooperation, and work had also increased bi the qiheres of Information and cultural relations. •^Other points In Mrs. Melr's address were that It was too early to speak of sn ^iproach to the new Kennedy Administration about questions vexing Israel in the Middle Eeast. As regards Ceylon's breaking off relations with Israel she would refer to the basic political concept that a country committee a political mistake when it allowed itself imhecesarily to be dragged into a dispute In which It is not a party.
