Rarely can an artist find a land whose hues, compelling magic and vibrant beauty are as inspiring as Israel, the Land of the Bible.
Of particular charm are two artists' colonieis — one in Safad, picturesque town perched in the Hills of Galilee, and the other in Ein-Hod, meaning "Source of Glory", located south of Haifa.
.In Safad, where the mystic Kabbala movement stared, the atmosphere of the Middle Ages reigns to the very day. Slow-moving, bearded men in picturesquely striped robes meander along narrow, cobbled mountain streets, going to the synagogues and then to their.shops to sell anything from eastern spices to hand-

beaten copper plates. In the background stand medieva houses huddled together, al most at a slant. An aura o; old-world mysticism prevails and in the midst of this at mosphere, in a lane where no auto can penetrate, hun dreds of ancient, worn stone steps lead to a bit of "Bo-" hernia". It is the "Street of the Artists" where gaily colored signposts point the way to brightly decorated studio-homes of Israel's painters and sculptors Their cobble-stone courtyards, filled with paintingss and sculpture, are bordered with flamboyant, exotic bougainvillaea and jasmin. Nearby are tiny synagogues with delicately carved woodwork; there is also a Crusader castle atop a high hill and an arch of ia forgotten By zantine Church. Mt. Cana'an overshadows the .' artists' lane, while below is the beautiful Sea of Galilee. An artist's retreat, Safad is also an ideal vacation resort, with comfortable hotels and attractive mountain trails.
Equally fascinating is Ein Hod, the artists' colony, with a magnificent view of Mpimt Carmel on the one hand and of the Mediterranean Sea on the other. Ein-Hod was

originally an abandoned Arab village whose houses and roofs, made of a mixture of mud and tree branches, were on the verge of collapse in 1949. The army was about to raze it to the ground when a Tel Aviv artist, Marcel Jancu, discovered ancient and picturesque arched walls there. Determined to prevent demolition of this village, he induced Israel's Association of Artists and Sculptors to claim the village. And in May 1952, the artists cut a path through rubble brush to the ruined houses of Ein-Hod, built roofs, installed doors and windows and planted tre6s and gardens. An exhibition gallery and a restaurant were opened and the art colony of painters and sculptors settled down to work.
But to an artist visiting from abroad, all of Israel, with its contrasting con-
tours, awakens his creative expression — the green highlands of the GaHlee; the purple dunes of Acre along the shores, called the Mi< East Riviera; the black am red mountains of the Negev; the flowers in Sharon; or majestic Jerusalem with its pale pink rocks and tortuous, ancient olive trees. Then again, it may be the electric variety of the people that is most inspiring. Barefoot Druze women in flowing robes with tall jugs on their heads shopping at pretty souk or bazaar; squatting Yemenite Jews smok ing a nargillah or water pipe; Arabs in baggy pants sipping Turkish coffee at a cafe and playing "shesh besh", a game of checkers and dice — the painter, sculptor or amateur artist will want to capture in clay, wood or on canvas all of these spell-binding vistas.
THE RED ARMY
(Continued . from page 4)
Russians were first with 7,627, the Ukranians second with 1,928 heroes, the Jews third with 379 heroes, the Bielorussians fourth with 244 heroes. Nevertheless, the memorandum said, the names of Jewish heroes were published only in the first edition of the booklist of 10,94,0 heroes. "Since then names of Jewish heroes have not, appeared among the respected sons of the Soviet Union."
PERSECUTED
The memorandum then 'listed a number of incidents in which Jewish veterans were deprived of bonus payments for their combat record, disabled Jewish veterans received nothing or niiserable pittances, while Veterans of all nationalities were given ample'help.
For Jewish veterans who returned after several years in the Red Army there, was novvhere to live and hp jobs. As a result many, Jewish veterans ^yere forced" to mdulge in black market operations, oth6r became beggars, the
memorandum stated. These,|S,tsdin met with a reign, oflteiri'or on a mass scale'tfnd thousand of Jewish veterans were sent to labour cannips.
^CONGRESS TO INVESTIGATE
Reliables sources 'told the JCNS correspondent that the Communist Congress received the memorandum and informed its signatories that the wHole matter would be studied. A Soviet representative in New York declined to comment, saying that he has no '-knowledge of in^ ternal matters of the Communist Congress.
