(By a CJN reporter) The city of Hamilton is proud to proclaim for its own the most beautiful orthodox synagogue edifice on the North American continent — Adas Israel.
Adas . Israel Synagogue dates back to the early 190O's. The founders of the then Adas Israel Anshei Sfard Congregation of Fla-milton originated from small towns in Poland. Thev organized their own shtibel. different in character from the existing synagogues.
In the spring of 1914. a group of individuals gathered in the home of the present Gabbai. Beryl Waxman. who resided on Railway Street, the center of Jewish ife in Hamilton at the time. The following Sabbath thev met in the home of the late Sholoin Mandell. There they held services for the next four months. A Sefer Torah was borrowed from the Agu-dath AcWm Synagogue. Next this determined knot of congregants rented a room from Mr. Max Katz 'on Bay Street, where the)' remained for three years.
In the fall of 1916, meetings were held to discuss the. possibilities of purchasing a house for the congregation. The following year they bought a dwelling on Cannon Street West, which remained a place of worship for forty-three years.'
BY TORONTONIANS
In 1928 ideas for a new synagogue germinated. In 1929 a structure began to rise in the center of the Jewish community. Completed in 1930, this building still stands on the north side of Cannon Street West, between Bay and Caroline Streets. ■
It was in 1957 that a few individuals, inspired by a drieam to rejuvenate the dying embers of Orthodox Judaism, decided to take action. Thev turned for guidance to Rabbi Walter S. Wurzburger, spiritual leader of Shaarei Shomayim Synagogue in Toronto, and Meyer W. Gasner, president of the Orthodox Division of the Canadian Jewish Congress. Rabbi Wurzbvu-ger suggested they contact Yeshiva University, who, in turn, re ferred Rabbi Morton Green to the Congregation. Under his spiritual leadership, the Congregation was charged with new enthusiasm.
THE RABBI
Originally from Montreal, Rabbi Green received his ordination from the Rabbi Isaac Elchahan Theological
Seminary of Yeshiva Uni versity, where he received his M.A., and at the Bernard R?ivel Graduate School as a candidate for his M.H.L.
Prior to his arrival in Ha milton in 1958. Rabbi Green was appointed Rabbi of Stern College SjTiagogue. Married to the former Syl via Hoffenberg, Rabbi Green is the father of three chil dren.
Under the capable chairmanship of Mr. Max Hoffman, chairman of the building committee, and Mr. Sam Katz, president of the Sv-nagogue, Adas Israel slowly but surely took form.
Recently the Synagogue held a Dedication Weekend. The Friday evening and Saturday morning services were enhanced by the liturgical renditions of Cantor Moshe Koussevltzky, accompanied by the Shaarei Sh«>-mayim Choir of Toronto. On Saturday night a dance took place in the Netkin Audit orium and Waxman Social Hall.
