HUMAN RELATIONS^
'Little Sister'
3
DR. ROSE N. FRANZBLAU
QUESTION: Last year when the unveiling of my mother's tombstone was held, I called my brother next to me In age to drive us and our older brother, who lives ill a different borough,- to the ceremony.
The brother 1 called, was always close to me, and he more or less brought me up. 1 am the youngest in the family by 10 years. My other brother and my sister were married when I. was a child.
The younger brother's wife has always been a source of pain to our family. She knew my parents objected to her and so she and my brother eloped—27 years ago.
She has resented us since. After my father passed away, her resentment manifested itself toward my mother. Her children never showed any respect for my mother or the rest of the family. We have tried to be friendly but we have always felt her hostility.
These underlying feelings finally gave way. She objected to her husband being our "chauffeur." Result—my brother came with his children, but without her. : Of all the children, there was the greatest love between this brother and my mother, even though he did riot see her often.
I had to make many calls to get somisone else to take us to the cemetery, i haven't seen my brother Bince.
He calls occasionally. I continue. to send his fahiily- cards on birthdays and anniversaries.
T resent that my brother has made no attempt to see.me. My sister-in-law continues to be friendly with my older brother and sister
ANSn'ER: The 10-year difference between you and this brother may have created a psychological confusion. about his role In your life. He was sufficiently older to play a part in bringing you up, but he was also young enough to be a somewhat older boy friend;
Your oldest brother Mid sister were almost old enoughj In your estimation, to be your jjarents, and were regarded by you as people of another generation and another world. All this put your iparents~rnore or less In the position of grauidpar-ents to you, and gave you pehnission to be closer to andjinore dependent upon'your younger brother than a sister usually Is.
The fact that your slster-Inlaw has been able to maintain a friendly relationship with ybur older brother and sister Indicates greater acceptance of her by them than you have been able to muster. She probably felt that any-friendly gestures which you made were tatended more to keep your brother close to you than to show friendliness to her. Also, you may have made frequent demands on your brother that were like this one—appropriate on the surface but really Improper at base, so that refusal and anger were the only possible outcome.
You somehow seem to feel called upon, although you are the youngest, to continue the tradition practiced by your parents. In this particular histance the hostility which they felt and expressed toward their son's wife is being carried on and continued by you. •
Your sister-in-law seems to have gotten al! the blanie for the elopement, while your brother was regarded as ah innocent little boy who was led astray by her.
Your brother's marriage has stood-the test of 27 years, and he and his wife have reared a good family together. The children are naturally loyal to their mother and naturally- resent anyone who puts their mother in ait unfavorable position and treats her like an intruder. Your brother would certainly bie violating all the traditions of good family life if he were to side with you against his . wife.
• • «
Tour sister-in-law Is not responsible for the fact
that your brother has hot seen you .since this event. This inconsiderate request at this partiailar time may finally have imveiied your underljing motives, and .your brother may not have liked, what he saw. The birthday or annlvei-sary cards you send may be to remind them of how forgiving you are. They probably resent this self-righteousness, and hoUer than thou attitude.
You ought to meet your sister-in-law alone and talk oyer the entire situation with her. You; may have done things to. annoy her that made her fee! excluded ind hurt. Listen to her. story and tell yours. When you cease to act as a spurious mother-figure or somepnie spieclal to yoiu: brother, who has a right to expect special consideration, a better relationship may develop between yoiu
