The He.xagram, a geometric figure formed by "coin-pieting e.\tet-nally an equilateral triangle on each side of a regular hexagon" (to use mathematical parlance), is more readily recognisable by Jews as the Magen David

be it the hallmarR for kosher or the yellow star used by the Nazis to":identify Jews.
So Unquestionably a Jewisli symbol is the Magen David that its significance seems intensified when seeing it displayed on certain objects in the Egyptian Art Exhibition now being held at the Royal Academy; and this, not in the Predynastic, Grae-co-Roman or Coptic sections, but in the Islamic period which dates from the Arab conquest of Egypt in the middle of the seventh century. In this section a fourteenth-century^ wood panel inlaid With ivory and ebony,, of "intarsia" decoration, has the geometric interlacing pattern so typical of Moslem art. This particular design encloses what the catalogue describes as " a six-pointed star within six hexagonal figures" and is reco- ' gnisably a true Magen David. ;
Another wood panel, of the seventeenth century and also inlaid with ivory, has Shields of David clcarlv de- j fined; while an eleventh to t twelfth-century bronze tray.; supported by a long shall 1 on three tcet. has a clearly marked Magen David, which takes up almost the whole surface.
The origins of the hexagram are unknown. It has been suggested that the very '. name derives from the actual shield used in battle by King David. Others ascribe the name to the shape of the ancient Hebrew letter "dalet," which was__rpii_ch|y. triangular in form and accept that the Cabalists used it as a mystic symbol ol much potency, its magic powers posed on the great achievements of the Psalmist.
It has long been used in the Middle East as an amulet against the Evil Eye and is one of the symbols found on a Palestinian tombstone i of the third century. It is: found u.sed as a noiiu'ial si-i
gnature among the York Ar-chiepiscopal records.
In the fourteenth century the Jews of Prague, by order of the king, had to have both the Star of David and the pentacle decorated on the community's red flags Borne in processions. The pentacle, a five-painted figure, is also sometimes called Solomon's Seal — certainly a confusion in nomenclature.
It is strange that so widely recognised a symbol of Jews and Judaism, recognis- j ed froin early time, should ' itself have no Biblical or Tal-inud tradition. That other universal symbol, the Meno-rah, can be traced back to the^seven-branched (.andics-tik of the Temple in Jerusa-
RECIPE Of THE WEEK
BLUEBERRY DUMPLINGS
1 cup biscuit mix U tablespoons sugar i cup milk cup sugar
cup water ■ cups washed drained j blueberries ; teaspoon grated lemon 'rind
Grated nutmeg
Stir together the biscuit, mix and sugar; stir in milk j with a fork. In a deep 8-inch : skillet with a- dome -cover, i stir the sugar and water together over low heat; add the blueberries and lemon rind and bring to a boil. Drop the biscuit dough, in 6 dumplings, over the blueberries. Co\er tightly and >imjner 15 to 20 minutes or until the dumplings are cooked through.
Sprinkle dumplings with nutmeg. Allow to stand off heat for about 5 minutes and the b!uebcrr>' sauce will thicken. Serve at once with cream. Makes 6 servings.
Jem, described in the Bible. Talmud and early Jewish Writings. It is'depicted on the Arch of Titus in Rome as one of the spoils of the Temple, proof, indeed, of the conquest of Judea and the fall of the State.
TQ.day\the-.symt)ol--'oJ the Menorah has been superseded by that of the Magen David. Perhaps, in the way in which the Ancient Scrolls have been resurrected, the origins and provenance of the Shield of David will b(: brought to light.

NEW ANTI-ISRAEL
■ - ■ . (Continued from page 3)
that it had provided a shelter for warring factions within the Arab world. Into the Swi.ss city, those Arab heads of State who feared fbr their future poured their spare funds as a stand-by for troublous days.
But, with the establishment of Israel and the coming of Nasser, many of them were induced, under the slogan of "Arab unity", to release some of these funds tor the creation of an Arab Propaganda Centre, or the-Arab League Information Centre as it is more tormallv known.
It is from this centre that the monthly French - language review "Le Monde Arab" (The Arab. World) is published. {:
Well produced and lavishly illustrated, it features articles by Professor Toynbee and others who share his views, togetlQr w-ilh. statistics and photographs on the
F'alestine Arab refugees designed to get home the message that the Israelis were respoiT5rbte"-for. the- fate of these luckless people. Also tji^ical of the kind of material disseminated by "Le Monde Arabe" was a recent article by Father Andrawos in which he attacked the Jews as "killers of God" and usurpers of Arab land.
Supporting this activity are various other journals. "AI Afkar" (The Thoughts) is published by a Lebanese Mr. Riad Taha, and has a French-Swiss editor, M.R. Villard de Thoire. It appears monthly and has a high literary standard. The U.A.RT^ permanent delegation to the Geneva office of the U.N> publishes its own weekly "Bulletin" from 2/ Place des Eaux-Vives. Most its space is given over to attacking Israel, Western "imperialisth" and France.
