A COMMUNIST HANDLES
A "PAINFUL SUBJECT"
How does a Corhraimist who writes in the Yiddish language and regards himself as a Jewish writer reconcile within himself the wholesale murder of the So\Tet Jewish writers in the last years of Stalin (to say nothing of the earlier list of Soviet Jewish writers who ended in asylums or died no one knows where or how)?
A due to this intriguing question may be foimd in a recent Issue of the Vochenbtott where its editor Joshua Gershman now touring Eastern Europe, faces the problem of the murdered writers. His article is entitled "In Sacred Memory" and its sub-title reads: "On .the tenth annlTCrstry of the Soviet Jewish writers who perished . . . thoughts en route".
After discussing his conversations with various Soviet Yiddish writers who contribute to Soviet-ish Haymland he remembers that August 12th 1962 was.the date--so it Is assumed, he adds - - on which it became ten jcears since til© "wTeckers of Soviet jutice did away with the most vigorous and productive creators of Soviet-Jewish literature and culture."
"I asked myself", he goes on, "how will this tragic date be observed? Does such a custom exist In Soviet Russia? How will the rehabilitated writers and ere ators of all the Soviet nationalities who were killed by the Ber-la gang,, be hallowed and remem-beredr'
HAS NO EXPLANATION
Gershman does not evade an answer. He writes quite frankly
"It must be said that I have not yet provided an explanation for myself'. he does state that the more than 100 Yiddish writ-contribute to So\'etisb Hayni' ers who contribute to Sovetisb Haymland and the other vocalists and aJtists are the "faithful heirs of the Markishes, Barge-sons, Quitkos, Hofshteyns, Fef-fers, Michoels' and Zusklns (a partial list incidentally, of the more important names among those murdered - M. H.) and he writes of the wish of the surviving writers of all nationalities to continue the work of the dead and build a Socialist future etc.
stilI unpublished in original ^
But Gershman's "Jewish-conscience" won't give Wm peace; It rtill keeps pricking him. It is as though th:ere_were a yeticr tov and a >'etzer ha-ra on each side of him, one suggesting all that was good in the USSR and the other reminding him of the abid-mg unpleasant facts, Another question keeps persisting as he visited the window of Peretz MaJkish in her home full of mementoes of her husband and translations of his works in many tongues: "Why not publish the works of MarkLsh and the others in the language they were written - Yiddish - and in which they were primarily meant to be read? And for that mater why publish the books of the present Soviet Jewish writers in all the Soviet languages except Yiddish?"

THE COMMITTEE
hopes answer will be "positive"
Gershman follows this pointed query with a pious wish . . . that sounds not like the words of a hard thinking dialectical materialist but like those of a pious believer who has a blind and rigid faith in his revealed relig Ion TiOr mater how outward circumstances may seem to Undermine it. Gershman writes almost wistfully: "This question was put by me and an answer will come. There are reasons to believe that the answer will be a positive one".
Gershman makes an Intriguing observation. He has noted in his conversations and reading in the Soviet Union that in dealing with the artists and writ-ers of other Sov:et nationalities vrtio were "done in " by the "wreckers of Soviet justice" (he never mentions Stalin's name In the article) It has become a custom to mark not the yahrzeit of their death but the date of their birth. (The circumstances of their death, of course, might throw too embarrassing a cloud over the evaluation or appreciation of their work). "I take It," Gershman writes hopefully, 'that a similar custom will prevail with the Jewish writers and artists. The important thing Is that the painful
matter should not be shoved Into oblivion.
RESTORAtibN "TOO SLOW"
In his final remarks he does express impatience that the restoration of Jewish culture to its rightful place in the Soviet Union is taking place at "too slow" a pace. Whatever positive signs he sees "provoke courage and understanding that our great 4oss .... Is being compensated, if one can indeed talk about compensation in respect^ to such a tragic event."
BASHEVIS-SINGER "A GENIUS"
Joseph N. Gelmon, ex-Winnl-peg newspaperman and now on the staff of the Globe and Mail has written a more than enthusiastic review for that paper of Isaac BasheVis Singer's novel "The Slave" calling him as he puts it ".. a genius ~ there is no other word." He goes on to say superlatively "never in my experience has a writer combined philosophy and art more masterfully."
In his zeal to upgrade Singer, .however. Gelmon, who should know better for he used to be
with Anglo-Jewish press, has, unwittingly perhaps, downgraded the language Singer write."! in.. For though paying tribute to the "expression and richness of this "dying language" he mentions that Yiddish is a language "which Is not much more than a collection of words and phrases from other tongues freely and frequently adapted to fit the needs of time and place."
This is the kind of description that used to pass in~ the old days at the turn of the century when Hutchins Hapgood and Stephen Crane were making excursions to Abe Cahans' East Side and discovering the vivid and vigorous life that revolved In and around the Yiddish language. We have advanced since then in our knowledge of linguistics and comparative philology to learn that Yiddish Is a language quite on its own feet with its own organic and characteristic idiom, syntax, rules, and structure, quite as much as any other vernacular that reflects a live culture, and not .<ome pid^n-talk that varies casually with each speaker. True,-its vocabulary has elements of borrowing in It but far less, for instance, than English, against whose pedigree and status no one would wmsper a word.
