A FORM OF RELAXATION
By RUtHIE
. There are some girls who look forward to going fo shopl (synagogue) in order to relax — and daven (pray) on the side. They can hardly wait from one Tom-rov (holiday) to another so that they can tear each other apart. And where else but in a shoot whiere so many people from all walks of life congregate under one roof?
■ * * ■ *
Last Monday, Yarn Kippur (Day of Atonement), was as good as any other. Let me hasten to say that I do not, for one moment, minimize the seriousness of the day. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year. At that time, pious and non-pious alike pray to God to be "inscribed in the Book of Life" and ask for forgiveness of iall sins — past and future. It is a time for meditation.
But how many times, during a twent>-four-hour period, can one repent? So if you remain in shool long enough, you may observe various forms of relaxation.
Because one fasts on Yom Kippur, one of the highhghts of any conversjation is food. You can hear from one,
"Take a look at my youngster. She's chewing like mad. She eats more on Yom Kippur than during the whole year."
From another, "I made sandwiches to last the kids all day, so I won't have to run home. It's only eleVen-thirty and they're all gone. You'd think a famine was around the comer. Any other day, I can't make them swallow a thing."
Then someone else says, "You should see the size of the honey cake I brought. I figure the men can have sometlidng with which to break their fast before going home. After all, they're working so hard."
By that time, if the saliva doesn't churn in your mouth, you're inunune to food.
You also find the kind who, during meditation, thinks,
"Hm-m! Look at all the mink stoles. The women have no place else to wear them, so they come to shool to show off. It's hot and sticky, but they clutch them around their throats afraid, maybe, someone will walk off with them."
At the same time, she wishes she had one too — bigger and better.
* * *
Then there are some females who continually wave across the room, or hold out their hands rigidly or, some way or other, gesticulate widly. And all because they hope you notice their diamonds which you can't avoid seeing. The size of electric bulbs,
they almost knock you cold.
« * •
If you're among these, you feel smug, one of the herd. If not. you still feel content — after all. you don't take it with you. Either way, there's no malice in your heart.
And if there should be a wee shade of covetousness in your soul, you can be certain that saying alkhet (forgiveness for the sin) is not far off.
