Canada and Israel
This week Jewish history — certainly Canadian Jew^ ish history — has been made in Toronto. Anyone with a sense of values in the field of international affairs will agree that the Prime Minister of Canada reached the moral niveau of q Balfour when he passionately and sincerely espoused the, cause of freedom common to Canada and Israel. Responding to Israeli Ambassador Herzog's address, Mr. Diefenbaker stated:
"...Ambassador Herzog is unsurpassed on the ambassadorial level... He made Canadian-Israeli relations so close that there are no bounds for this friendship"
Ina different field affecting the Jewish position in Canada, Mr. Diefenbaker attained anolher level of, candor rare in diolomacy and politics. When speaking about his dedieation'to full equality of all races, religious and ethnic groups, the Prime Minister pointed ^toward Senator David Croll, seated at the same dais, as an example 6f opportunity jor e^^ery Canadian for his to take.
Still another important feature of the': Diamond Jubilee Convention of Canadian Zionists is: bi-part^ sanship regarding Israel has been establis}ied once and for all by both the PrinTe Minister anTthe leader of the opposition who addressed .the convention a . day before. Mr. Lester B. Pearson criticized very strongly tjic arming of Nasser, by the Soviet Union, In his impressive address, Mr. Pearson stated that the Arab refugee problem, in its settlemeht, must be associated- with the accepitance of Israel as a living, constructive force in the Middle East.
Thus_Jhe leader of the opposition has endorsed ^ fully the Prime Minister's active friendship for Israel as part and parcel of Canada's foreign policy. :
' There is no question about the fact that those participating in this assembly of Canadian Zionists have sensed throughout that they haive lived a historic moment. As Mr. Diefenbaker Hgfitly stressed in his meniorable speech, Israel and Canada are friends not only because of mutual iiiterests in the Middle East but,: first and last; because of d common affinity based upon a common faith inGod'siruth as revealed at Sinai Political temperatures fliietuate but faith \ of man in God's word ditd in the Piyinc promise of the return of the children of Israel to the Land of Israel shall never fade away — so long as Jews and Christians alike remain true to the teachings of the Book of Books. . ■'./.y^^'y^
they will take up in Israel."
A man who has given of himself to wide and significant areas of Jew ish life, Dr. Burvvich has held high offices m many of the central organizations of the Jewish community, nationally and locally. A lifelong Zionist, he has been national chairflian of the Canadian Association for L a b o u r Israel, is the President of the Labour Zionist Movement of Canada and recently ser\'ed as a member of the national executive of the Zionist Organization of Canada. He ser\'ed over the past six years as the national secre-tarj' of the Cainadian Jewish Congress, in whose ranks he took a leading and active role for over two decades, and is now a member of the Board of Goxernors. He has seh'ed as a- member of the executive of United Jewish Welfare Fund of Toronto, as Vice-President of Canadian-Palestine Trading Corporation, and on the execiitive of United Zionist Council of Canada. He has been an ardent w'orker for Jewish edu-' cation, has ser\ed as the chairman of the Toronto Bureau of Education, arid has been one of the stalwarts of the Farband Folk Schools in Toronto. He is a native of Canada, and is fluent in English, Hebrew and Yiddish, both in "speaking and writing. He is. a prominent pediatrician.

ABORTION OBUGATORY ACCORDJNG TO J£nLAW»MOTIiR IN DANGER
NEW YORK (CJN) -Abortion is obligatory when the mother's life is at stake, according to Jewish law.
• Birth control is encouraged when the health of either mother or child is in danger.
• Sterilization is condoned when necessary for the mother's wellBeing—but is never permissible for males.
• Mercy killing is not necessarily prohibited if the killing is in fact a mercy.
• But in actual practice Jews have always emphasized the absolute sanctity ot lite and the rabbis erected many safeguards to protect
it in all circuinstances, even when there is great pain.
These conclusions were arrived at by Rabbi David M. F e 1 d m a n (Conservative), spiritual leader of the Bay Ridge Jewish Center in Brooklyn, at a seminar on Jewish ethics in medicine in New York this week. The seminar was one of a series of workshops on Jewish ethics conducted at the 15th biennial convention of the New York Metropolitan Region of the United Synagogue of America.
The United Synagogue is the congregational arm of the Conservative Movement in Judaism. Rabbi Feldman stressed
that Jewish tradition holds life dear and its laws were designed to prevent the wanton taking of life. He pointed out that when mercy is not an issue, it is even forbidden to lay hands on a dying man for fear an unnecessary touch might hasten his death. These safeguards, he said, are in keeping with the general spirit of the affirmation of life which pervades Jewish teachings.
Rabbi Feldman said that in the case of pregnant women whose babies might be born deformed, as with thalidomide babies, Jewish sources teach that abortion is not sinful.
LVBAVITCH REBBE GIVES O. K.^OrS€NDAY SCHOOLS
NEW YORK (LNS) — Speaking here on the subject of Jewish education, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, said that all methods must be utilized in bringing Jewish education to Jewish children.
Although it is only the Yeshivos and Day-Schools which carrv' the standard in Jewish education, the Rebbe said, we unfortunately find that a relatively small percentage of our children attend >,such schools. Recognizing this fact, we rnust utilize the limited time of instruction offered by after-

noon Hebrew classes, arid even the one hour, or less, per week, offered in Jewish Sunday schools for giving the children at least a glimpse at true living Judaism.
Here, the Rebbe continued, comes the opportunity for the sincere Jewish educator and teacher to instill, during
this extremely limited time, in the heart of the Jewish child sitting near him a boiindless E^ttachment to his living heritage, and of course what is inost' lniporfant"~ti5 infuse the children with a quest for rnore knowledge Of Judaism so that they demand from their parents to enroll them in Day Schools.
