"Good heavens!" exclaiiii-ed the youth with the yar-mulka, who had shoved his way to the dishevelled head of the milling multitudes at the airline desk'; to ask' a question and to receive a reply that obviously displeased him considerably.
He shoved his way back ' into the madding crowd, and ! in growing bewilderment I : surveyed my fellow-passengers. Never, not in a I month of Saturdays, had 1 I seen quite so many beards, I side-curls, "shaitels" and i kosherer-than-sheitel ker-i chiercoverings all convened I together, all apparently "en i route" for Israel or escorting , passengers Israel-bound. I "Who are all these I people?" I inquired of a ! seemingly knowledgeable neighbour. Maybe it was the Monostropoler Rebbe off to found a Hasidic colony in Sdom or perhaps Satmar was sending a Beth Yakob contingent to train in Israel's army.
She eyed me in amazement, touched with scorn.
"Is all sorts of people", she shrugged. "This is America."
Yet there were times, aboard this extraordinary charter flight (arranged by an agency specialising in travel arrangements for religious groups) when I thought I was in Chelm, Kasrilevke or merely some dreamworld arising from my own private airborne flight of fancy.
As the aircraft took off, air hostesses distributed "Tefilat HaDerech" cards with the prescribed prayer lor passengers, issued by courtesy of the travel agency. Some of the recipients reacted rather nervously and began to speculate about the airworthiness of the huge Boeing 707. But the bearded ones promptly opened psalters and began to pray with passion.
While some prayed, others played.
"Chavivele! Beloved! Bu-bele! Honey! Darling!" kosher would be wolves wooed the stewardesses wishfully. "All the time they run backwards and forwards with theeir twinkling feet and rosy cheeks. A health on their little heads!"
MATCHMAKING ABOVE EARTH
"So how did you get on?" a much married gentleman demanded eagerly of a young unmarried gentleman emerging from confidential confabulation with one of the uniformly light-legged blue-suited demoiselles.
"Hmm!" retorted the young man enigmatically, retiring to his seat and the "New York Herald Tribune."
"Ah, nothing will come of it," prophesied the questioner fatalistically, to the world and his wife. "He is still a bachelor, "NEBACH" And she is such a pretty young thing that I thought something would happen. But he doesn't have marriage on his mind."
Too bad. Aerial matchmaking is an inducement that £/ >1/ has never properly explored or exploited, But what potential! AVhy, they could treble their traffic with the single market...
"Traffic ahead has reduced our altitude to 29,000 feet," announced the pilot. In vain I look-for traffic m
the blank blue brilliance of an utterly empty sky.
At 41,000 feet a rabbi decided t6 "daven mincha." The afternoon was drawing to a cloudless close as he donned his shimmery capote and his big black hat, collected a quorum and led them towards the cockpit.
"They're just doing it for show," muttered a Brooklyn businessman mutinously. "There's still plenty of time."
Seconds later the worshippers were making their way to_the reai^f the aircraft where the hostesses hovered prayerfully at their heels, protesting. Apparently the "daveners" were upsetting the airplane's delicate equilibrium. This weighty matter was settled w-hen the quorum moved to the middle where they were per-| mitted to pray in peace.
"I don't believe m sort of thing," growled Brooklyn businessman, went on to say that wanted his eldest son
b(Jt she had got herself engaged to an Iraqi who was "tall, slim, greeeneyed, with nearly black hair. Very sentimental. Full of life. A bit possessive but you know how it is
Why was she cr>'ing? Well, he was just embarking on his army service so that 2h years and thousands of ctvatery miles stretched between the young lovers. But she was going to learn Hebrew and- earn money in the interval.
"Just Hebrew and Rumanian. Rumanian and Hebrew.
For five weeks I was feeling lost," lamented a lady from the Bronx. "I couldn't speak a word. Now I'm going to come into my own."
Her husband released a melodramatic moan. "Oh boy, you know what that means! My wjfe is going to be a honky tonky. Bla! Bla! Bla!"
Let me~ confess that my sympathies were entirely with the lady from the Bronx. The chequered Charter Flight alone has supplied" me with weeks of conversation pieces.

Food was kosher, of course. So when "special kosher" packages were distributed lo "special kosher" passengers, dissatisfaction rumbled down the aisles. One gentleman complained bitterly be- j cause his name was not on' this list, even though he had omitted to put it there. Another grumbled that such preferential treatment "makes the rest of us look bad."
Personally, 1 felt good. And when we touched down at Lydda, I felt even better. For what should we see ar-j rayed before us but half the; population (at a rough' count) of the State of Israel and a guard of honour in-, spected by the Premier,. David Ben-Gurion, himself? It turned out that this re-1 ception was for President \ Houphouet-Boigny,. of the ; Ivory Coast, but for us it' was a lilting lyrical land- '■ ing, precisely as though El; .4/ ha.d pre-arranged a floor show for the charter flight flyers.
Days dashed by and soon | I was back in Lydda. "Are! you on the 11 o'clock i flight?" I asked of riiy com-: panion on the bus to the ' airport. "I am the pilot," he replied pleasantly.
We were requested to report at 9.30 a.m. Arriving at ten, we found the halls flooded with passengers, packages, escorting friends emotional relatives, tumult' and mass-produced confusion. Air hostesses who stay soigne at forty thousand feet wiped damp hair from flushed faces, flapping like chickens as they tried to separate travellers from npn-travellers. "What can we do? For every person who goes away, 20 come to see him off!" And a tiny boy with streaming peyot held aloft, high and proud like a lulav, a cluster, of tali crimsoned irises.
HEBREW & RUMANIAN
Miraculously we made it. At my side a Californian, returning from a Kibbutz, ul-pan, sobbed sporadically all the way to Oily airport. She hadn't learned the Janguage ("I spoke more French than Hebrew"), she confessed.
