DATELINE: HAMILTON
AS I SEE IT
By paul hanover
I hope I can get Gary Lantens
before he moves to the Toronto Star. He will fill the gap left by Pierre Berton when he decided he'd run out of encyclopedia arid frozen food salesmen to expose. Anyhow, Gary could do a nice Job on my Idea, "Pity The Performer 1" (Mostly me, of course).
Any kind of performer, enter, tainment, athletic ,of even poll-tfc^J.) You talk about walking naked in Ule world. What other pursuit lies so exposed. If It's not the professional critic of the press. It's the^amateur In the audience. Man, wouldn't^ I Just love to be able to read In the press "Joe, Shlemozzle gave one of the poorest performances this reporter has seen in all his years of covering the used car beat. He should liave had that deal wrapped up In ten mlnut-es!" Or maybe: "The Scrooge award of the year goes to Harold Imgllck of the Heartless Finance Co. This critic's word to Harold is: alright, foreclose If you must, but don't demand another bonus I Hmmm, maybe Mllford Smith would be interested.
And how about something similar from Dr. Walter Alvarez.
Now, If Ray Bloch will play a chorus of, "I've Got No Business In ShowbuRlness", and Mr Hold-en dim the lights, I'll give you the punch line to this stream of self-pity. It was Jack Carter, the day he was Interviewed by Elwood Glover, who aald: If you're a met. chant or a manufacturer, and a customer doesn't like your merchandise, that's bad enough; but when you're a performer, wow I It's YOU they're rejecting!" (Music up to full crescendo. Hanover stands for a few moments in full darkness except for spotlight picking him up head and shoulders only. Out spotlight. Curtain I and deafening applause).
Anyhow, It was a good kibitz to pitch in for Hamilton Lodge B'nai B'rith Travel Club.
FRENCH IVAZI HELD
PARIS (JCNS) — Jacques Vas-seur, condemned to death In his absence by a French military court for being a Nazi collaborator, was arrested in Llllo last week by the French police. He has been hiding In his mother's house, in the attic, for the past 17 years.
Knovm as the terror of the town of Angers during the Nazi occupation of France, Vasseur, now aged 42, was responsible for the deportation & murder of hundreds of Jews and underground fighters. After undergoing special training at the Nazi police centre in Berlin he served as Gestapo agent In the region of Angers.
He will be re-tried by a special court at Lille,
and 28th. Producer and director was Mrs. David Walters.
A membership tea was sponsored by the Sisterhood of the Congregation Beth Hamedrash Haga-dol on December 4th. Convener was Mrs. Flora Reiehman.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Mount Sinai Sanatorium held a luncheon meeting at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel on December 4th. A skit, "Cinderleah", highlighted the program.
Sjrd Levy's band Is fast. be. coming the Murray Alter of Hamilton. Come to think of it, maybe of Toronto too since he has a good list of bookings in that area also. Mel Gunn handled the spot dance bit nicely, and chairman Emll Black ran around looking like the father of the Bar latzvah boy. Originally, I plan, ned to sing "What Kind of Fool Am I," but, with Abe ^Hoti there, I knew I'd get t-o many, answers. It was rough enough as It-was. I told him after the show, "Look Abe, am I partner In your business? Not that I know of .said he. "OJC. then. How come you always want to be a partner In mine?" I'm gett Ing even though. Next week I" walk back and forth, in front of his yard, carrying a sign: CALL ABE CHERTKOFF, FIRST I
Onetime football great and TV broadcaster, "Red" Grange proved one of the best speaJcers—for Viceroy Reading todgeV annual sports night. The committee, Including PhU Rosensheln, Saul Smurllck, Sheridan Lax and me, knew ahead of time how good he would be, thanks to a midday limcheon-get-together In the Con-naught. (Guess who paid? Wrong! It was Phil.) "Red" was commiserating with Bemie Falo. ney about the knee operaton: "You never really forget about It. I had one aiKi Its the best weather forecaster ever Invented!" Quipped Sheridan. "OK. then. What's the weather goli^ to be like for the Grey Cup?" Snapped back Red "Sunny and a high of 70. And if you're surprised .remember I had the operation In Florida 1
"Even the vast Adas Israel auditorium foimd itself strain-
ing from the size of the crowd. But a more, gorgeous and c6m. fortable; setting has as yet to be found. No wonder Max Hoffman and Sam Kata wre all; smiles that night. I can hardly wait to see what Molsh Gold is going to send me about the Men's Club New Year's Eve party there .. .a Hawalan theme no less, for the President's Ball,
Our congratulations go to Can--tor Henry Zimmerman of Beth Jacob on his-recent trip to New York city to officiate at the Yls-kor services of the Branch 360 Workmen's Circle, They chose him not only for his ability, but also because he Is one of the few surviving members of the Jewish conuminlty of Lublin his honie-town In Poland.
