Barney Cohen called the telegraph office and asked the operator to take a telegram to Pottawatomie, Indiana.
"Please spell it," asked the operator.
"Listen, now, miss" replied Barney. "If I knew how to spell it, I would not send a telegram. I would send a letter."
No Matter How It's Sliced...
Four salesmen who met in the smoking car conversed for some time. Finally one of them said:
By the way, my name is Cole. And yours?" "Kinsley," said the second. "And yours?" "Carleton," replied t h e third. "And what's yours?" "Also Cohen," answered the fourth. Most Refined
Morris Levine, president of the Better Cloak and Suit Company, wrote a letter to a customer reminding him of a debt which had been long overdue. Morris was not sure whether the letter was properly worded, so he showed it to his wife.
"Let me compliment you," Mrs. Levine commented. "It is nicely written and your expressions are very polite. I wish, though, to make two small corrections: 'dirty' is spelled with one t, and there is no c in 'skunk'."

SOME OBSERVATIONS
By RUTHIE
There are many usung heroes. Among them are cab drivers, those eager to please and willing to impart a bit of homespun philosophy. They talk breezily, seem nonchalant and dish out a patter that tickles the funny bone., And fpr that alone they deserve a medal, e'spe-, cially at a time When one is engrossed in his own little world of problems imdesirous in emitting even a suggestion of a smile.
Of course, there always is a sprinkling of stinkaroos. They, happily, are in the minority. .It has been my fprtime to encounter both.
*, * ■ * t
Recently I took a cab for a short distance. (Being of the laz5L.(?) gender, the prospect~of walking wasn't tod exciting.) Since I was in no mood to talk, I settled back and shut my eyes. But not for long. Somehow I became interested-in the traffic. There must have been a bottleneck beyond; cars were crawling at a snail's pace.
Finally my cab picked up speed. I noticed after awhile that I was riding longer than usual. Becoming more observant, I saw we were going along a roundabout route.Jfhis startled me. After all, if a taxi driver doesn't know the short cuts, who should?
"Sir," I volunteered, "you could have gone the other way."
What do you think the cabbie answered? "This way I make more money."
His effrontery threw me. For once I was speechless. If ,he griped about the size of the tip — it served him right.
* * *
This experience by no means shattered my faith in humanity. I hailed another cab going home. And this time IS mir gelungen (I succeeded).
All of a sudden I heard, "Take a load of that. That dope — what does he want to do, kill liimself?"
That "dope" was a youngster driving a red, convertible sportscar.
"Look at him zig-zag between those cars. He thinks he's, having fun. Well, some day theyll lift his bones out.".
Pleasant thought! Naturally I had to put in my two cents' worth.
"My husband says, when you drive, being careful in not enough: you have to look out for the other guy. But I don't drive. I'd rather ride in a taxi and not have any worries."
Thus we were led into a conversation which jumped from one topic to another.
"I don't own a car," my companion announced. "It's a nuisance. On my day off, my friend does the driv-mg.
"Oh," I encouraged. "You don't take a busman'i holiday?" "Nah."
"And how does your wife feel about it?"
Nu, that's all I needed to get him started.
"Wife? Huh, who needs one of those? I got a divorce fifteen years ago and I was never so happy as I'm now. Nag, nag, nag. That's all she did...
"I go to the cottage with my friend. We go fishing, duck hunting. He does the cooking and I serve. Not a bad arrangement.
"I have a house. My mother takes care of it. I get good food, I sleep in a clean bed, nobody bothers ma What more do I need?' .
"Do you have any children? noseybody asked.
"No, luckily."
"Well, maybe your wife should have worked or done something on the outside."
That set him off on another tack. "So I got a brother whose wife works. They have two kids. I baby-sit. He was $2,000 in debt. So she went to work to help out. Now he's $3,000 in debt.
"Everything she makes goes for clothes and make-up. She's got to look decent when she goes out^ so she never has any money.
"If those dames only knew what we think of them! Take a look at them around Bloor and Yonge. Their heads look like a rug spread out for a jet landing.
"My friend takes a girl to a dance. So he wants to put his arms around her, she says, 'Don't squeeze me; you'll crease my dress! He wants to kiss her, she says, 'Don't, you'll smear my face.' If he stands close, she says, 'Don't touch mel I just sprayed my hair! So he gives her two dollars, puts her in a cab and let's her go home alone."
By that time I was doubled up from laughing. Jackie Mason, Shelley Berman, Allan Sherman — zay megeti zikh alle bahlten (they could all hide).
My new friend was just warming up, "Did you ever notice a woman's eyes? She uses black eyebrow pencil, blue shadow, some other'jiink'on.her lashes, then she circles her eyes because maybe you can't see them.
"The other day a lady-driver called oiit, 'Where am I?' So I said, 'Lady, put dipwn the gloves you're holding in one hand, get the cigaret out of the 6ther and take off the dark glasses, so maybe you'll see where you are.'
"And she looked up to see where the voice was coming from.r^af drives a car!"
