Washington, (JCNS) New York Republican Senator Jacob Javits described the U.S. State Department's present policy in the Middle East as 'very confused' during question hour in the Se nate last week. He told the Senators that the time "has come for the State Depart ment to appraise very carefully whether we are justified in our current policy with respect to President Nasser, without apparently any assurance of any action leading to a diminution" of tension in the Middle East.
"We have a report that the Department of Defence has assigned U.S. paratroopers to participate in the training of Saudi Arabian commandos when, at the same time, we are contesting the presence of Egyp)-tian troops in the Yemen," Senator'Javis said. "On the other hand, we have recog nised the new republican regime in the Yemen, notwithstanding Nasser's intervention there. It seems to me those are very contradictory decisions."
Senator Javits said he was raising this question now because the U-S. was maintaining a very large aid programme to Egypt and the U.S. Congress was getting ready to consider new appropriations for the programme.
"It seems to me, either we are proceeding with a very contradictory policy or we are not using the diplomatic and economic strengths we have in order to help bring greater tranquillity to this very disturbed area of the world," he said.

boarding house<;um-restau-rant is now without supervision, since the Munkatch-er Rav, who used to supervise it, has left for Israel, and the Mashgiach has also resigned. Despite his efforts to get a Sao Paulo rabbi to supervise, the owner has been unsuccessful, probably because of the strained relations existing among Ortho dox rabbis here.
Since the Orthodox restaurant in mid-town Rio de Janeiro's Rio Branco Avenue closed down about six months ago, Sao Paulo is the only Brazilian city where an officially kosher restaurant meal can be obtained. The Jewish population of Sao Paulo is 40,000.
