Tha CaiMAon Jcwfth New*, Friday, April 26rii, 1963 — Pago 5
As the Fifteenth Independence Day of Israel approaches, I send my most sincere greetings to all the House of Israel.
May blessings descend upon the Defence Forces of Israel, alert and vigilant to protect the Homeland, on the pioneers of settlements and the builders of the national economy in agriculture, industry and trade, and upon

all who are at pains to advance the education of the people, its culture and the teaching of its language!
And may blessings ■ de' scend, as well, upon men of research and of science, helping in mind and hand to uplift the prestige of Israel, to gather in .brothers from dispersion and mould them into a'single nation, free and creative on the ancestral soil! May they be rewarded!
Let us be at one, on this Day of Independence, with all who gave their lives on the altar of the Homeland, the heroes to whom, as to their families, our debt is immeasurable. Let us stand silent in homage to their glorious memory.
This has been a year to honour the "First Ones",

the first to have the vision, the first to realize it, the men who, by prophetic power, by the spirit of pioneering that pulsed in their hearts, by the toil of their own hands, forged the foundations of the State whose fifteenth birthday we celebrate today.
We now move on to the sixteenth year of independence, in full awareness of this enterprise of reJ-demption and revival. Let us double and triple our efforts, each one of us, day in day out, to achieve our great mission — the strong foundation of our State, the revelation, and development of our country's latent power, the enlightenment of oxu" my-j-iad newcomers.
It/is our State's most earnest wish to see peace established throughout the worid, both as a loyal member of the family of nations and as a nation, with bitter experience of barbarity, that has now shouldered the task of making its deserts bloom again.
There is a special prayer upon our lips for the welfare of that part of the world in which we dwell.
SPAAK CANCELS VISIT
JERUSALEM (CJN)—The visit of Belgian Foreign Minister Paul-Henri Spaak, who was to-arrive here Tuesday, has been postponed at Israel' request because of the death of President Ben-Zvi,
The poHtical upheavals which, day after day, convulse adjacent territories do not abate our endeavours or weaken our faith,,:, that the peace we look to between us and pur neighbours will surely come. Now, as in the past, we stretch out our hands for peace towards them. We pray that, in the course of time, they will realize that only mutual undei-standing and cooperation with Israel can bring about enduring security, progress and well-being for the lands of the entire region.
But, so long as our neighbours threaten, night ancl day, that they mean to destroy us, it is our duty to increase pur military preparedness and apply ourselves to the unceasing development of the strength of our Army, in which our trust is placed.
My warmest greetings are sent from Zion and Jerusalem to all our brethren, wherever they be. May all of them be blessed that aid us from afar in the aliyah of less-fortunate fellow-Jews and their tegration in the Homeland, the up-building of our country and the reinforcement of its economy! May their hearts draw pride and comfort from the achievement of our State!
My fraternal salutations go to all who themselves turn their gaze upon ali-j-ah to the Homeland. May it be the DivTirel/Vill that, before long, it will be our privilege to behold the realization of their yearnings!

The government of Israel proclaimed a national week of mourning (Shiva) and, also, a period of remembrance of thirty days (Shloshim). AH movie houses, theatres and places 6f, entertainment in Israel will be closed for a week.
Prime Minister ^pavid Ben Gurion issued a proclamation to the nation on the great loss. All faccibns joined the speaker at a special session of the Knesset in the eulogy for the president.
Ben Zvi was elected president of Israel for the first time on December 8, 1952. He was re-elected in 1957 and again in 1962, for a third term. He was the second president of the state of Israel, succeeding the late Chaim Weizmann.
;:. ■ LIVED IN SHACK
The loss of the/^eloved president is shared by all Israelis. He was ^ socialist and, simultaneously, an orthodox Jew; a/Talmiudic scholar arid a modern historian. He lived a modest life,/kept as his actual residence a shack in the Labor district of Jerusalem ,and would appear in his .presidential, residence only for official functions.
The tall, lean figure of Yitzhaq Ben Zvi was a famiUar sight to Jerusalemites. The inhabitants of the Holy City would watch him every Saturday morning when he walked to his little synagogue and, agair), on the Sabbath afternoon when he was accompanied to his shul by his fellow worshippers for the study period of the Talmud which he rarely missed.
He was beloved by all the people m the fullest sense of the word. His idealism, his humbleness, his love for humanity, his tolerance, became proverbial!
As Ben Gurion said in his proclamation to Israel, "Ben Zvi will be truly ihissed by all his brethren".

LONDON (JCNS).—'Recommendations for a new policy statement of the Labour Party in regard to the problems of the Middle East, including the Arab-Israeli conflict, will be considered by the National E.\ecutive in two weeks' time.
They are contained in a draft document prepared by the research group and international affairs experts at transport House and will be made public only if and when the National Executive gives them its approval. One of the eight recommendations calls for a public appeal by the Labour Party to all States in the Middle East "to foreswear the acquisition of any but conventional weapons." Another urges Britain to support any fresh initiative for a peace settlement, by direct negotiation, between Israel and the Arab States.

If approved, the new policy would express Labour's welcome for the new Arab regimes in the hope that they will develop into social democracies devoted to the raising of living standards and peace.
