Bj Lord Longford
the catholic
church
The Eorl of Longford (formerly Lord Pokenham) Is one of Jtw most promltwit loy members of the RofTKm Catholic community in Britain. On numerous occasions in Parliament ond outside he hos deferided the Jewish cause.
In trying to assess the new atmosphere in the Catholic approach to the Jewish world I have gained invaluable insight from discussions with the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion. This congregation was founded in France in 1842, and has the special aim of promoting good will towards the Jews. 'We have suddenly found,' they told me last week, "that we can talk to Jews like brethren."
This has its counterpart in the much-increased interest in the Jewish religion which is now emerging among Catholic students. At the Newcastle Vocation Exhibition the Sisters <rf Sion used their stall to exhibit Jewish ceremonial objects. And many young Catholics discovered with joy for the first time the Jewish
foundations of their faith. Another thing much in evidence at the exhibition was the number of Catholics who through their work with Jews had come to love them and to value the truth that they possess.
All this has not come easily. There were bad old days when the Sisters encountered indifference and lack of understanding.
From whence has the inspiration come. Beyond all shadow of doubt it has come from the Vatican. It was Pope Pius XI who said, in 1938. "Spiritually we are all Semites"; and in 1955 Pope Pius XII placed the Good Friday prayers for the Jews on the same footing as other prayers. Previously, "hpr-ribile dictu", we did hot kneel when we prayed for them. The recent assault on Pope Pius XII becomes all the more painful when one recalls the strength of his actual good will, for the Jews. But it is Pope John who

has turned the stream of friendliness into a flood. He came to his office with all to9 much past experience of Jewish suffering in Bulgaria and Turkey.
The concrete changes he has introduced can be briefly recited. A passage in the baptismal rite for adults, as well as a paragraph in the Consecration to the Sacred Heart were deleted in 1959 as liable to cause offence to the Jews. In Holy Week, 1959. a longoverdue change was effected in the Good Friday Uturgy. Up till then we were enjoined to pray for the "unfaithful Jews," and there was a later reference to "Jewish unfaithfulness.' These words have already been robbed of some of their painful-ness, but it was Pope John who ordered that they be completely omitted.
But these are merely the outward and visible expressions of a new emphasis, which can be described not unfairly as a new attitude. Perhaps it is expressed most effectively in the words of Pope John, when he was visited in October, 1960, by representatives of the United Jewish Appe^. They paid homage ^to hini in grateful remembrance of his war-time efforts to rescue the victims from their persecutors. Pope John responded to them with an affectionate greiet-ing of his own, overcome
— as has been well said
— like Joseph, who found his brethren after a long separation. "I am Joseph, your brother," he declared. He went on to say that for all the difference between those who accepted the Old Testament and those who added to it the New, "We are all sons of the same Heavenly Father." No leader of the Church had ever so clearly before insisted that Jews and Catholics were all members of a single fam-ily.
There can be no doubt, therefore, in the minds of Catholics who are trying to practise their religion, where their duty lies. Whatever excuse there may have been previously, there can no longer be any excuse for any Catholic who treats the Jews as less dear to God than himself. That does not mean that a Catholic will in future vvater down his own faith m his dealings cither with Jews or, for that matter, with Anglicans and Free Churchmen. But it does mean, to quote the last Encyclical "Peace oiJ Earth," that in the Catholic view, as now authoritatively stated, "Every humaii being has the right to honour God according to the dictates bf an upright conscience. All men are 6qual in their natural dignity. Consequently there are no p 61 i t i c a 1 commumties which- are sup^f by na-

'ture, and none which are inferior by nature."
Indeed, though I am not sure how to put this into theological terins, the latest Papal pronouncements about our Catholic attitude towards the Jews mean even more than that. Not only do they mean that Jews are infinitely valuable in our eyes as human bemgs. But there is, it seems to me, a special recognition of their place in the economy of salvation. The common roots, the common inheritance, are stressed as never before. They are "the original olive tree on to which the wild olive of Gentile Christianity has been grafted."
All this sounds fine. I wonder what it will mean in practice? A major pronouncement from the Vatican Council is widely expected. Rea'ders are already aware of the great friendliness of Carduial Bea, who^ influence and standing are exceptional. But whatever the pronouncements from on high, it will remain for individual Catholics to give effect to them in their daily lives.
The return of Catholic representatives to_ the Council of Christians and Jews (including, incident-ly^ myself) is highly welcome. But this again is only of lasting value if it represents welcome. But this again is only of lasting value if it represents a new outlook. It vvould be difficult even for someone much more learned than myself to explain, let alone justify, the historic treatment of the Jews by organised Christianity. Mo one must confuse the unimpressive record of Christians in that respect with the indescribable atrocities of the Nazis and other anti-Christian forces in recent yeare. But it may be. if good is to be discovered in evil, that, these same tmparalleled atrocities have at last helped to awaken Christians, including of course Catholics, to a sense of their own collective guilt in the neglect of theu: duty to their Jewish brethren. It may be that this has been among the forces which have helped to brmg a new and nobler attitude into being.
Be that as it may, the hearts of those such as the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion. who have laboyr-ed in thls^great cause of Jewish-Christian friendship for over a century, are singing with joy at the new birth they are beginning to see around them. Miracles are not to be expected firmly set* and not a Catholic of overnight, but the trend is firmly set, and no Catholic of my own acquaintance — I may be lucky — is reluctant to follow it.
A further thought occurs to me. If I were a Jew I would be almost as irritated at this time of day by an organised Christian . effort to befriend me, as by positive maltreatment. There must be complete equality and mutuality. The Sisters of Sion set a useful example here. Their Centre is one for "Biblical and Je\vish studies", in which the aim is to understand one another. They are ready, of course, to give advice, but are never tired of asking for it There are occasions: it may be that the vindication of the memory of Pope Pius XII is one, in which the help of Jews may reasonably be looked for by Ca:tholics.
Certainly \ the aim is clear for all to sec. "A bridge . which links two shores; which spans an abyss, which opens a road foi- communication, which is thus an instrument of Peace."
