DR. ROSE N. FRANZBLAU
QUESTION: Recently my husband suffered a mential breakdown. During this time he confessed to. a love affair with another married woman. He also claims he loves me as' much as ever.
He has always .been suspicious of my actions and has eveij accused me of extramarital affairs. I have never given him even the slightest cause for this.
Part of his illness shows as a great persecution complex with suspicions regarding anyone and everyone. He was always jealous of anyone I came in close contact with, such as friends, female or male. I know he requires extensive medical help. He refuses to belieVe he is sick or ever was isick. He was hospitalized and blames me for this since he cannot seem to accept the extent of his illness. He was given shock treatment.
ANSWER: Along with delusions of persecution, there are usually delusions of grandeur.
Harder than any persecution by an outsider is this kind of punishment that a person inflicts upon himself. When it becomes too painful, he builds up an fantasy to explain this persecution. He makes himself into someone who possesses some super-human skill or knowledg&, or some great secret that could save mankind.
* * •
Just as your husband had illusions about your fantasied flirtations with other men, this supposed love affair of his with another woman might have been an illusion too. The confession, especially if it should be untrue, gives him a great sense of power and heightens his feeling of
desirability. He can have the kudos without the guilt feelings which would' arise if it were true, -
It is always difficult for the family to adjust to the changes and adjustments that a mental patient is going through.
The breakdown is really a break with reality, and on recovering the patient keeps testing the reality from which he escaped into illness.
* * *
To help him, it is important that the extent of his recovery, rather than the extent of his illness, be emphasized. There may be times, however, when he will refuse to accept the proffered approval and encouragement and become suspicious of those who offer it. The family must not be thrown by his fears or his anger at any inability to operate as well as he would like They must try to stand strong and stalwart especially when his confidence in himself begins to wane.
There is probably a social service department in the mental hospital where your husband was treated. The social workers often continue to work with the patient after his discharge. They also counsel and advise the family. It is suggested that you contact this social service department for help as to how to handle yourself in relation to your husband, and how to make him feel less defensive about having been ill.
When he sees you, the healthy one whom he loves and respects, going for some guidance, he will not fight continued treatment so hard or feel stigmatized by it.

MARRAIVOS JAILED m AIAJORCA
TEL AVIV (JCNS;). More than 60 Marranos have been arrested in Palma de Majorca because they expressed a desire to revert to Judaism, according to Daniel Krespi and his son Raphael, themselves former Majorcan Marranos:
They told journalists here that the people under arrest had submitted a joint petition asking to be released and for permission to establish a synagogue on the island, but their request had been turned down by the authorities.
Despite these arrests, said Mr. Krespi, the movement towards a return to Judaism was spreading in Majorca and many youngsters wished to emigrate to Israel. He has now returned to Palma with his son "with the determination to assist the Marranos to revert to Judaism."
Previous reports here put the number of Marranos in Majorca at "many thousands."
