JERUSALEM, (JCNS) — Beirut journalists have found a noyel way of making an easy living. They have been coming into their offices in the early evening, turning on tape recorders and taking down the two evening commentaries broadcast in Arabic from Jerusalem. These they have been sending down to the presp, with minor alterations, ready for publication the next morning as their own work.
This was disclosed recently by the Lebanese daily. "Al Hawa-dith", Mr. Gideon Weigert, a commentator at Kol Israel, told the JCNS correspondent here. The paper said the authorities discovered this practice after observing a remarkable similarity between a number of leaders in Beirut newspapers and the text of commentaries from the Israeli Radio.
But this was merely one of numerous pieces of evidence of the efficiency of "Dar el Iza'a el IsraeUa," Israel's broadcasting service to the surrounding Arab world, Mr. Weigert declared,
Last year Nasser himself went
on record as telling a delegation of-Palestinians Hying in the Gaza Strip: "Every day I read what Israel's Arabic station says; this is part of my routine." This remark was broadcast several times, even by Cairo Radio.
The popularity of Israel's Ar abic broadcasts is also apparent from the steady stream of mail reaching Jerusalem. listeners in Arab countries send in comments and queries via friends in Europe or Asia, often Turkey.
Israel's Arabic service transmits for seven and a Twt'f hours a day. This is a mere whisper over the ether compared with the recently augmented broad casts from Cairo, Damascus and Baghdad, Mr. Weigert said.
The Arab stations round Israel have a total output of more than 2,000 hours a week. Cairo alone, with its various parallel stations, transmits for 117 hours a day.
Baghdad and Damascus are each on the air for Zi hours while even Jordan has expanded its service and now broad
casts 20 hours a day without in-teiTuption.
Consequently, in the long interval between seven in the morning and J o'clock midday, and again after 11 at night, when all Arab stations put over their best programmes, even the most willing of Arab listeners have no choice, hearing nothing from Jerusalem, but to tune in to one of the stations in an Arab coim-try.
The director of the Israeli station says that the very minimum needed is twelve hours a day. He is confident of Ijeing able to put on first rate programmes during this time, even without increasing his staff.
The problem is, of course, money. Cairo radio's budget runs into millions of pounds. But the facts have to be faced. Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq already have television and Jordan is setting up, a TV service.
Israel does not even have any plans for Arabic televisibn, so "Dar" will assume even greater importance.

B.e. RBICWS lAYON AFFAIR
TEL AVIV, (JCNS) - The "Uv-on Affair" which scandalised Israel's political life two years ago and led to new parliamentary elections, might be resurrected ■ this time by Mr. Ben Gurion.
According to very reliable sources this is one of the reasons which induced Mr. Ben-Gurion to resign three weeks ago. E^:£r since the Lavon Affair broke he has reiterated his desire to put things "in their pro
per order". Now that he is free he thinks he is able to say his final word on the subject.
It has been revealed that during many months a special team was engaged in collecting documents and other evidence on the "Affair",-including papers which have never before been mentioned or published.
It is believed here that Mr. Ben-Gurion will not start publishing any material before the
Eshkol Cabinet Is fully established. He considers the imme diate opening of an anti-Lavon campaign "for historical reasons" might further weaken his own party - Mapai - and lead to new internal conflicts. Consequently he is reported to have assured Mr. Eshkol and other close friends that his counterattack niay be "delayed but will come soon".

Orthodox Against Elaborate Funerals
NEW YORK, (JCNS) - Orthodox Jewry In North-America took an important step towards ending ostentatious fimerials and their un-Jewish aspects last week when its representatives announced the dgning of an agreement with the Jewikh Funeral Directors of America, the general organisation of undertake-ers. "
At a press conference, spokesmen for the Union of Orthodpx Jewish Congregations of America and the Rabbinical Ck)uncil of America expressed their satisfaction with the results of the negotiations which have lasted for a year.
Funeral directors will now give bereaved families a Jewish Ftin-eral Guide suggesting halachic practices, including the use of a shroud and plain caskets and an end to the piractice of "view-ihg."

Professor Joklik said he himself had decided to leave Egypt in spite of the very high salary he was paid, because he was asked to parUcipate In the production of nuclear weapons. As regards the denial of his Austrian citizenship by the Austrian authorities. Professor Joklik said he obtained it legally in 1M7. This held good even if he had omitted to opt for such citizenship, sbce it was not ask ed for at a time when chaos prevailed in the country immediately after the war, he said.
