Vlaregglb, (JCNS) - Guldo Piovene, the welUmown Italian auttior. Journalist and novelist, last week became the subject of Italy's foremost literary prizes, second only to . the famous Rome prlre. "Piemjo Strega".
The Vlaregglo Prize, worth 10,000.000 lire is subsidised by the Olivetti typewriter C(Hni»ny. When rumours spread a few weeks ago that Guido Piovene's latest novel "Le Purie" ("The Furies") was, among the inany candidates the most probable wiimer, Signor Arrigo Olivetti, who represents his firm on the executive board of the Prize told the jury:
"As an anti-fasdst and a Jew T wish to express strongly my opinion on the inopportuneness of awarding thie prize to Piovene. Were the prize given to him I reserve to myself the right to draw the necessiuy conclusions." This was imderstood to mean that the Olivetti company would probably withdraw its financial
support
Signor Olivetti's objections were motivated by the fact that Piovene has been a lifelong and viplent fascist and ahtisemlte. In 1938 he wrote a series.of anti. Jewish articles in the Milan paper, "Coriere deila Sera."
Although, in 1961 and 1963, Piovene publicly stonexl for his anUsemltlc and- fascist". stand. Signor Olivetti mantained that a prize known to be bispired by anti-fascist deals shoulil not be awarded to a notorious fascist and racist author. After a long and dramatic debate the Jury decided to award this year's prize to Antonio Delfihi. writer who died earlier this year, but then resigned en masse in protest against what they considered to be pressure from the sponsors of the Prize. The Prize is now likely to lapse unless a new Jury willing to accept Signor Olivetti's uncompromising ideals is formed, or a new sponsor found.
Mystery Man h Berth
VIENNA (JCNS). — Sensational reports in the Israeli press that a man arrested in West Berlin last year was a high-ranking Sfl. officer wanted for wartime crimes against Jews, are wide of the mark, according to informed Austrian reports.
The Israelis had asserted that the man, Wilhelm Schmidt, was a former S5. Obersturmbarm-fuhrer who held executive positions in various concentration camps, including Theresienstadt, during the war.
After escaping arrest in Austria, he was said to have gone to Israel and lived there for four years, practising as a doctor in Ashkelon and using false papers acquired from » doctor killed at
Theresienstadt in 1943, Dr. Egon Alexander Puerth. In 19S3 he went to Argentina and thence eventually to West Berlin, where he was arrested last year.
Informed circles in Vleniu bear out the fact that Schmidt masqueraded as Dr. Fuerth for years, but say that he. apparently had no connection with any crimes against Jews. His arrest in Vleima in 1948 for treq»ss and fraud resulted in a 15-montfa gaol sentence. How he obtained Dr. Puerth's papers is not known.
As far as can be ascertained in West Berlin, as weU as here, Schmidt was detained In the West German capital only because he was working as physician illegally.

THE PRECEDENT-SHATTERING THE TASTE-SETTING THE ELEGANT
London, (JCNS) — Cairo has suggested that Morocco and Libya could do more to curb the prolsrael activities of their Jewish community.
In a broadcast to North Africa, a Cairo radio commentator said the least these coimt-ries could do Is to ensure that "the Jews In the Arab lilaghreb area are not a support or a source of men or money to Is-rati and that no loophole is left for Israeli cultural or eco-nomio infiltration Into their
countries."
The scope of possible action is extensive, said the Cairo com. mentator. "It starts by closing the doors and windows to Zionism and by disarming toy Zionist activity that may be undertaken by the Jews in the Arab Maghreb area.
"It ends in positive and effective participation in the work for the Palestinian cause In every field, including the armed battle which is Inescapable for the liberation of Palestine."

JiWtSH BANK TRUST
Buenos Aires, (JCJNS) r- A decree was issued by the Argentine Central Bank last week liquidating the Banco Tsraelita del Bio de la Plata, the foremost Jewish public financial institution in this coimtry. As a result, a number of Jewish business firms operating on Banco Israelita credits are threatened with bankruptcy.
Three years ago, the bank was the centre of a court case when one of its clients was found guilty of tising Banco Israelita credits for the purchase of goods to be smuggled into the country. The client, named Todres.
and a number of bank directors were sent to prison.
Since then, a new board of directors has been trying to put the bank back oh its feet and only reicently annotmced plans for the augmentation of its capital. Just a week before the li' quidatlon decree a promise of co-operation was given by the highest authority in the Central Bank.
The directors and D.A.IA.. the representative body of Argeh. tine Jewry, have a4>pealed to President Guldo to cancel the decree and allow the rehabilitation of the Banco Israelita.
