CONGREGATI<^^st SETS PACE FOR RECORD ISRAEL BOND CAMPAIGN: One of the most outstanding successful Israel Bond events ever held at Adath Israel Congregation took place on Saturdoy evening, September 14, when almost 600 members and friends attended the gala "Eveoing of Entertoihment with Bmil Cohen", which preceded the Slichot Service. Always o bulwark of support for Toronto's Israel Bond efforts qp behalf of the State of Israel's econ-omir development, Adoth Israel this year set a new target for itself — o 50% increase over lost yeor's totql pledges. So enthusiostic was the response of those who portieipated in the sociol ^ening that Bond Chairmen Louis Gulo, ond Mrs. Edwin Hyde report that 40% of the new target figure has olreody been achieved, prior to the Yom Kippur Appeal in the Synagogue. Greetings were brought to the roily by Brotherhood ond Sisterhood Presidents, Sidney Storkmon ond Mrs. Robert Koy who pledged the devoted efforts of their members towards achieving a record number of Bond committments during this "Eve of Redemption" Bond Drive at Adoth Israel. SYDNEY, AustraUa (JCNS). -Rabbi Simon Silas, Australia's first Sephardl rabbi, has arrived here with his wife to take up his assignment as rabbi of the New South Wales Association of Se-phardim in Sydney. He was selected for this post by the Haham, Dr. Solomon Gaon.
On arrival here, Rabbi Silas, who was met by representatives of the Sephardi community at Sydney airport, said that he hopes to unite the Sephari community of New South Wales. His ambition. Rabbi Silas said, was to build a strong united body in .Australia similar- to the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' Congregation in Britain.
For the past four years Rabbi Silas, who gained his simciia in Jerusalem, has worked with the Golders Green Sephardi congre-(ration- and as ttssistant to the Haham. A native of Calcutta and son of a Sephardi minister. Rabbi Silas was educated at Manchester Yeshlva. and the Ponov-itch Yeshlva in Bnal Brak, Israel.
