MONTREAL -
Lubavitch's billboard welcoming the Messiah has reappeared in a new location, not far from the north end of the Champlain bridge toward the Decarie exit.
The eye-catching yellow billboard, declaring Bienvenue le Moshiach, was on Ae Ville Marie expressway, near Decarie; for over two months.
Lubavitch's Rabbi Ronnie Fine said it is hoped the sign will attract a new audience, pei-haps American tourists coming into Montreal this summer.
He described the response to the Moshiach sign as "phenomenal.. .We get over 20 calls a day, mainly from Jews, but also non-Jews."
The sign includes the phone number 344-CHABAD, which connects you to the Moshiach-Messiah Information Line. Callers cian leave a message or dial another number for a
recorded lecture on the topic of Moshiach.
' -Every mitzvah, good deed we do brings the revelation of the Messiah closer," the tape concludes.
Rabbi Fine admits Lubavitch has also taken criticism, especially from mainline Orthodox rabbis. "But once we tell them about the results, they didn't have what to answer. There is no argument."
He tells about one young man, a visitor from Vancouver, who was so fascinated with the subject after being introduced to it via the sign, that he had a one-hour interview with Rabbi Fine, which the man videotaped.
Another story is about an 18-year-old French-Canadian boy who, after seeing the sign, got in touch with a Jewish woman who worked \yith his mother.
Through the woman's son, who is a Lubavitch Worker iii New Jersey, the young man obtained a yideo of
Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson speaking, which he watched with about a dozen of his friends. Rabbi Fine said.
' 'The cost of the billboard has been worth every penny," he said. "Because it has aroused curiosity in people and our goal is to plant the seeds of Judaism wherever we can."
Some 25 classes on the topic of the coming of the Moshiach have been held in private homes this summer, and 80 percent of the participants are new contacts for Lubavitch, Rabbi Fine said. He thinks the billboard had a lot to do with it.
Montreal is the only Canadian city so far putting up such a billboard, but several U.S. Lubavitch communities are using the medium.
"Jews tend to think Judaism should be insular, something confined to the home andsynagogue and not public.
! "We say that everything in Creation can be used for the glory of God, even a billboard." ;
