EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
BSmOl SAYS: WAR IS HOT "IIHMIHiHT"
LONDON (JCNS) — The following exclusive statements in reply to questions put to him by the JCNS were made by Levi Eshkol, the Israeli Premier, in London, England, last week end:
Question: How seriously do you regard Nasser's latest threats?
Answen We must, of course, always be alert to the possibility of aggression. But I do not think there is any imminent danger of war.
0.: What importance do you attach to the activities ot the so-called Palestinian storm troops and Syria's border provocation?
A.: The pattern^ of Syrian -border aggression *is by now well-known and the- latest incidents fall within this pattern. The Syrians should know by now that any attempt to encroach on our sovereign rights will be effectively resisted. As for infiltrators, we consider any-Arab country from which they come as responsible.
Q.: There are reliable reports of moves towards union between Jordan arid" Egypt which could result in Egyptian troops being stationed in Jordan. How would Israel react if this scheme were implemented?
A.: We do not have the impression of ariy imminent Jordan-Egypt unity. Rumours of this kind have been circulating for the past ten years. Q.: Are you hopeful that the
Western Powers \n\\ influence the Arabs not to pursue their scheme'to divert the waters of the River Jordan?
A.: We certainly hope that world opinion will in some way influence the Arabs to desist from diversions.
Q.: What view do you take of President Bourguiba's recent speech in Jordan?
A.: I read it with interest.
Q.: Do you see any new signs of Arab readiness to reach an understanding with Israel?
A.: Unfortunately, not at this stage.
Q.: When is the likely date of the Knesset elections?
A.: The elections are scheduled to take place at the end of the four-year term of the Knesset in November. But there is some talk among the parties of advancing them by a few months. The reason is that some feel it might not be bealthy to have the country engaged in Histadrut elections in May and then election atmosphere for the Knesset to continue for six months.
0.: In view of the big minorityr vote at the Mapai Conference' against alignment, do you feel that there is a serious danger of a Mapai split before the elections?
lA." Certainly not.
0.: In which fields can Anglo-Israeli relations best be strengthened?
A.: I would be able to say more about this after my visit.
