POUSSE CAFE: mVINDIBITED
The only thing with which one can credit Pousse Cafe is its cdlorfulness and Red Light character. Otherwise, the brassy musical at O'Keefe Center is nonde-.script and mediocre. Were it merely a glimpse at the seamy side of life, it could pass for a third-rate sort of entertainment. Based, however, on The Blue Angel of some thirty odd years ago — it falls short. One merely can conclude that it takes more than just a good sob story to melt a blase audience of the 'si.xties. ■A * *
Lilo is a fine aciress. it is unfortunate, though, that the comparison is made with a Dietrich who became a star in the original version uf the .s!ul who tielped a professor deteriorate from a respectable position in societv to the lowest dregs of life.
Theodore Bikel, however, brings mcjmentum and com passion. In the role ol Pii.>-fessor George Riiter, he is; aware of his follv. Seek-ngi the love and allection he I has been denied most of hisj life, he goes the wav o( all flesh — and cannot help it.
Mr. Bikci's e.xpressions of sympathy for the Protessor. his delicate manners and beautiful \oice are superb. . Gary Krawford brinsjs
credibility to the youth John Harmon whom the Professor saves from life's pitfalls and who, in return, scorns his teacher for having strayed.
Jeff Siggins makes a delightful Arthur Owen, Jr.,. the innocent little college-lad who finds himself in the-middle of everything sordid. For the rest, it is all so much glorified night club. .
And where is Duke Ellington whovvrote the score? In-place of the famous, soul-JT stirring music, methodical-wail of dissonants and sim-? pie melody, there is served an assortment of rehashed-sound, a cacophony of noise.;
