BONN (JCNS) - An official denial that West Germany's economic talks with Israel "represent attempts at an undercover continuation of the reparations programme," and an attack on the Federal Government's attitude to Israel by the former Chancellor, Dr. Konrad Adenauer, are keeping the issue of relations between Bonn and Jerusalem to the fore in the West German press.
A Foreign Ministry spokesman said here that the talks with Israel concerned "completely normal questions of trade and credit transactions only."
He recalled that, following the signing of the Reparations Agreement in Luxembourg in 1952, the then Israeli Foreign Minister, Moshe Sharett, had stated that Israel would raise no further demands against the Federal Government with respect to the Nazi persecution of the Jews.
This statement, contained in a letter from Mr. Sharett to Dr. Adenauer, provided the basis of the present talks, he said.
However, Dr. Adenauer, speaking at a meeting of his Christian Democratic Union, alleged that Chancellor Er-hard's administration was responsible for a serious deterioration in the good relations which he had created between Germany and Israel.
Reconciliation with the Jewish State had been among the principal political aims of his Government. If the relationship with Israel was now disturbed, there would be serious repercussions in the attitude of the free world to the Federal Republic.
Government circles here are manifesting some concern about the character and outcome of Dr. Adenauer's intended visit to Israel in May. They fear that, during his stay, he will express per-
sonal views on the German attitude to Israel which will differ considerably from those of the present Government, and that this might create "unnecessary and unwanted" discussion.
The former Chancellor's statements on the topic of
the German-Israel talks have visibly annoyed the Foreign Ministry, His criticisms are regarded as unfair and rash. It is claimed that he had informed neither the Government nor his own party of his views in advance of his public statements.

MISSING PERSONS
BROUGHT REST
Last Sunday afternoon, March 20th, the body of the late Theodore Vaskevitch, 53, of 313 Ridley Blvd., finally was laid to rest at Toronto's Bathurst Lawn Cemetery, Adath Israel section.
Vaskevitch, engineer and industrialist who was vwll known and beloved in the North York Jewish community for his modesty and gentle manner, was a victim of the tragic accident when a BOAC plane crashed during its flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong on March 5:h.
Adath Israel Synagogue was well filled with those who deemed it an honor to have been Theodore Vaskevitch's friends. Though words failed, Rabbi Er-win Schild, spiritual leader, made a moving eulogy, Cantor Murray Nixon chanted the memorial prayer.
Besides the deceased's wife, Shulamit, mourners present included a brother who came from Israel (Courtesy of BOAC), an aunt from New York and son David, just turned 13, who recited kadish. A daughter Ruth, 10, also suiTives.
The dignified services were arranged by Park Memorial Chapel.
LONDON, (JCNS) - The following editorial appeared in the London (England) Jewish Chronicle on March 18th:
One need not look beyond the borders of Germany lor probing criticism of disturbing develop-menls ins:de the country. The Federal Republic's oulstandin<! statesman, ex-Chancellor Kon.-ad Adenauer, has weighed in to criticise his own parly's approach towaids economic relations with Israel. Senior Ministers have expressed their concern at the growth of what is usually called radical Right-wing nationalism and sometimes neo-Nazism.
"The fact that the criticism i; coming from high and authoritative circles has a dual significance. In (he first place, i! leaves no room lur complacer.t pooh-poohing or for suggesting that these stories are the creations of the sensational press. These are serious matters raised by serious people. On the other hand, the fact that prominent members of the ruling party-even though this party, like most, has its groupings are openly voicing concern shows that powerful forces are at work in Germany to right the balance. They deserve our understanding and tactful support.
"The new Germany has several times been written off by impatient critics abroad, only to come out on the right side in the end. The original negotiations for reparations and restitution faltered several limes before they finally reached the stage of accomplished fact. Though there is ample room to criticise aspects of restitution law and payment, it should not be forgotten that this, too, underwent
an evolution since the original agreement, and ended by paying out infinitely more than had originally been estimated. The recent evolutions in German policies towauis Israel and the Middle East arc instructive. After scemmg to give in con;-pleteiy to Arab demands which went far beyond whiit a State can legitimately demand of another, Germany rallied, rejected Arab pressures and called Nasser's bluff.
"The blockage in Israeii-Gcr-man relations now is concerned with the continuation of the special relationship which Dr. Adenauer believes must continue between the two countries. There is no point in ignoring the fact that many influeniiaf voices are raised in Germany to press the theme that they have already made sufficient reparation. Needless to say, the most vociferous were once raised to oppose reparations, and many belong to those who share the guilt which made reparation necessary. Dr. Adenauer is right in believing that Germany needs this special relationship as much as Israel does. Those who ignore it are guilty of shortsightedness. Dr. Erhard won his spurs as an economic miracle maker; he has yet to pro\e that he shares the sense of history and firmness of purpose which made Dr. Adenauer great.
"The outside world cannot remain unaffected by this struggle for the soul of Germany, or rather Germany's struggle for its own soul. Responsible and firm expressions of opinion can help make all Germans aware of what the outside world thinks and thus encourage the best tendencies.
