Sam Netkin never forgets his humble beginnings as a young immigrant from a small town in Europe. His many contributions to worthy causes stem from his compassion for the underprivileged and the needy. At the same time, his generosity has won for him many friends.
Sam, who is president of S. Netkin and Sons, Limited, United Fruit Distributors, attributes his financial success to hard work mingled with cordiality.
Apart from familv and business, Sam devotes most of his time in serving the .synagogue and the community at large.
He reached the presiden-
cy of Adas Israel Synagogue when it was yet located on Cannon Street. It was during his tenure of office, as the result of his efforts and own contributions, that the burning of the mortgage took place.
His activity at the synagogue did not terminate with the office of president. Sam is a member of the Board of Governors and is active in the Men's Club. The auditoriurn of the new Synagogue is dedicated in his and his wife's honor.
Since its inception, Sam Netkin has been a governor of the Hamilton Hebrew Academy. He has contribu ted generously to yeshivot and other educational insti tutions here and abroad. He has served as chairman ol the Board of Governors of the Hamilton Israel Bond campaign. Toronto's Jewish Home for the Aged, UJA. Welfare, Synagogue, refugee rabbis are but a few of the many causes to which Sara contributes unselfishly.
Tillie Netkin, who works
side by side with her husband in all his endeavors, is active in Hadassah, Sisterhood, B'nai and B'rith, to name a few organizations!
Sam's sons, Melvin (Sonny) and Barry, who have inherited their father's altruistic traits, share in the family's vast enterprises. Two daughters, Mrs. Alan Gould of Hamilton and Mrs. Alfred Gottlieb of Detroit, plus his ten grandchildren serve to round out a full and happy life for the Net-kins.

Since the Birch files are secret, there is no way of checking these claims, but there is no doubt lliat some Jews do belong to the John Birch Society, because an

organization of some of them— the Jewish Society of Americanists — was formed three months ago.
The three founders of this latest fringe group are: Michael Kogan, 23, a graduate student of philosophy at Columbia University; Samuel Blumenfeld, 39, of Boston, who is on the staff of the Birch weekly, "The Reviews of the News", and Alan Stang, 33, of New York.
Mr. Kogan is now a member of the new group's executive committee, while Mr. Bltmien-feld is its vice-president. The president is Mr. Joseph Siegel, of Colorado Springs, Colorado,
who was recently elected president of the B'nai Israel (Conservative) congregation there.
According to Mr. Kogan, "there is nothing in the John Birch Society programme to attract
antisemites ----If somebody is
foimd to be an antisemite he is expelled ..."
But the A n 11 - Defamation League is not as sure as Mr. Kogan about the John Birch Society. A few days before the formation of the Jewish Society of Americanists was annottnced in the "Bulletin" published by the John Birch Society, the A.Di. repeated Its charges of anti-semitism against it.

ISTANBUL, (JCNS) - Because two American rabbis were among the religious leaders who signed an anti'Turkish statement published in American newspapers last week. Rabbi David Asseo, the Chief Rabbi of Turkey, has felt himslef obliged to issue a statement of his own, declaring that Turkish Jews enjoy full rights and religious freedom.
The statement which appeared in the U.S.A. did not mention the Jews at all, but made allegations of discrimination by the Turkish Government against Turkey's Greek minority and pressure against the Ectmienlcal Patriarchate.
However, the independeiit Tur-kish newspaper, "Yeni Gazete," published an editorial deploring the fact that two rabbis had signed the anti-Turkish statement and asserting that silence on the matter by the Turkish rabbinate would mean that "it shares the views of the American religious leaders."
Rabbi Asseo's statement was issued soon afterwards. In addition to saying that Turkish Jews had always enjoyed religious tolerance and been assured of their constitutional rights, it denied the "unfounded charges" in the American statement.
