BNAI BRAO. Israel -, Hundreds of mourners participated last week in the funeral rites for Rabbi Benjamin Dienstag, formerly of New York City, who died here at the age of 88. A native of Mielec, western Gad-cia, Rabbi Dienstag was known for his piety ahd scholarship. .More than si.xty years ago, ha was agitating .'or the revival of Hebrew as a living tongue despite opposition among orthodoxy in the Galicia of those days. He was a Zionist when Zionism was very unpopular.
In New York he was very well known in the old Galician East Side section and respected for his integrity and orthodoxy cou-pled with tolerance. Several years ago, his book of polemic attacking the anti-Israeli position of some ultra orthodox circles. "Ti-ten Emet LeYaacov", made an impact in the rabbinical world.
Rabbi Dienstag is survived by several sons among whom are; Dr. Jacob Israel Dienstag, head librarian of Ycshiva University; Chaim Dienstag, prominent New York businessman; Cantor Isaac Dean.
A surviving brother is Rabhi Shlomo Drilllch, translator of th'. Talmud into Yiddish, forraely of New York and now of 3nai Braq.
