AttEPrS CAU TO BECOME CHIEF RABBI
LONDON (JCNS) - Rabbi Dr. Immanuel Jakobovits flew back to New York under a cloud of official silence but it seems now more than likely tliat he will return to London as the new British Chief Rabbi.
Dr. Jakobovits, the sole candidate for the position, was in London for seven days for preliminary discussions. Although tight-lipped honorary officers of the United Synagogue revealed nothing about the contents and consequences of his meetings. Dr. Jakobowts himself told a JCNS reporter that he would make a decision on whether to accept the position in just a few days after his return to New York.
He would then notify Sir Isaac Wolfson, the chairman of the Chief Rabbinate council and expected that body to make an official announcement.
BRUSSELS, (JCNS) -Attracted by the world-wide publicity given to the controversy over the German-Jewish dialogue at the fifth plenary assembly of the World Jewish Congress here, Belgian fascists made their own dramatic intervention.
When delegates to the assembly returned to the Pa lais des Congr&s after the symposium on the "Unresolved Problem" of German-Jewish relations they found crude swastikas smeared on he large Congress placard displayed — together with the flags of Belgium, Israel, the United Nations and the WJ.C. — outside the building.
And on the pedestal of the large monument to the Sol dier-King Albert in the garden adjoining the Palais des Congres there was chalked the slogan:
"Free Europe from the Jews", while inside the Palais itself there was scrawl-

^ RES. 488-4231 '
With the opening of the new school year, the Toronto Jewish Teachers' Seminary (Mldrash.i ,'Morlm) enters the fourteenth year of its existence. Founded in 1953, the Seminary has ir.anaged during the comparatively short period since its inception, to train a total of 112 Hebrew teachers.
Many of the Midrasha graduates are now occupying teaching i>ositions in various Hebrew Schools of Metro Toronto, in the United States and in Israel. During the coming school year, Mi drasha graduates will also teaching in the following Ontario communities: Kitchener, St. Ca therines, Hamilton, Kingston, Sauk Ste. Marie and Sudburj'-
Registration is now on for new students who wish to enroll in the Midrasha for the school year 196M7.
Candidates who are eligible for enrolhnent will have completed nine years in a Hebrew Day School or ten years in an Evening School, or have an equivalent knowledge of Hebrew subjects, having passed an entrance examination.
The Midrasha curriculum is based upon a four-j'ear course of study, hve days a week — Monday through Thursday even ings and Sunday afternoons. The faculty includes some of the most qualified and senior pedagogues in the community, as well as teachers from Israel and
generally one member of the staff of the Ontario College of Education who gives a course in Educational Psychology. Coiu-ses included in the curriculum are Bible, Talmud, Jewish History, Prophets, Hebrew language and literature, Yiddish, Prayers, Methodology, EducationaJ philosophy and Educational Psychology.
Candidates with an advanced knowledge of Hebrew subjects, especially graduates of the Toronto Senior Day High School, or of Israeli High Schools, may b-s admitted to a higher class and would be enabled to complete their studies and obtain a diploma as a qualified Hebrew teacher in one or two years.
There is a prevalent need for the services of qualified Hebrew teachers in many Canadian com munities. Qualified teachers who can act as Baalel-Tefillo and conduct synagogue services have ex' cellent opportunities to obtain lucrative positions in some of the smaller communities.
Candidates who are interested in enrolling lor the coming school year in the Midrasha need apply to the Bureau of Jewish Educa tion, 22 Glen Park Avenue, Tor onto 19 or telephone RU 1-5611
The Toronto Jewish Teachers Seminary is co-sponsored by the Toronto Bureau of Jewish Edu cation and the Canadian Jewish Congress. Central Region.

SUCCESS OF DIALOGUE
The Nazi outrage was committed only a few hours after Dr. Nahum Goldmann has proclaimed the success of the German-Jewish dialogue, which he described as the beginning of a very long process of exploring ways for co-existence between the people who were to have been exterminated and the people in whose name the extermination was planned and committed.
Dr. Goldmann said that since the Germans had perpetrated the crimes it was now their "moral and intellectual duty" to take the initiative and evolve the means for "bridge building".

The symposium itself went off without incident. It began with statements by representatives of the three political groups — Herut, Mapam and Ahdut Avoda —• which decided to boycott the meeting with the German and whose members absented themselves from the proceedings.
Speaking in front of half-a-dozen television cameras — five of them from Germany — they declared that as theirs was the generation of the Holocaust; as German war criminals were still at large ;and as the neo-Nazi groups were on the march while former Nazis were still in positions of influence and power, the time for a German-Jewish dialogue had not yet arrived.
It was irrelevant whether this or that German had a good record, said the spo: kesman for Herut, since every German bore the stigma of Cain on his forehead.
Undeterred by these comments. Dr. Eugen Gersten-maier. Speaker of the Bundestag of the Federal German Republic, said in his reply that he understood quite well those who were absent because they were opposed to the dialogue and those in the audience who might close their ears in order not to hear a German voice "whatever it may have to say".
He declared that while "the emergence of small groups of the radical Right" (in Germany) was worrying and demanded watchful control on the part of the authorities, it did not indicate that National Socialism was being reborn or that a return to barbarism was "always" possible in Germany, as Professor Ger-shon Sholem, of the Hebrew University (a former German citizen) had slated earlier in the debate.
Dr. Gerstenmaier accepted that "the terrible debt ol blood looms inescapably over us.... It may be that my generation will not be allowed to see a new, free relationship between the Germans and the Jews....
'We Germans may possibly have to accept for a long lime that patient and respect ful distance which is most adequate for the unforgel-abie nature of the catastrophe". Dr. Gerstenmaeir concluded.
aC PRESENT
BRUSSELS, (Special). -Tl.e possibility that one day there will be a more normal relationship between Jews and Germany was broached here in cautious terms by prominent Germans and Jews.
(The Canadian Jewish Congress-which in February informed the Toronto Globe and Mail it opposes the German-Jewish Dialogue, did not join the leftist opposition against the appearance of Dr. Gerstenmaier).
The fact that rabbis and lay leaders from 50 countries were willing to attend the discussion was regarded as an achievement.
Representatives of two fsraeli parties, the left-wing Mapam and the right-wing Herut, protested the inclusion of such a topic on the agenda as well as the appearance of Dr. Eugen Gerstenmaeir, President of the West German Bundestag.
THE BURDEN OF HISTORY
Dr. Gerstenmaier and other speakers suggested that reconciliation between Germans and Jews might not be for this generation. The West German leader said that as long as "the burden of history is upon us, there are limits to our tongues and to our behavior that we Germans cannot cross even if our heart impels us".
