Many Would Leave Russia If Permitted
Undon, (JCNS) — If the gates of Soviet Russia were opened at least hi.*;f the country's three million Jews would immediately emigrate to Israel. This is the view of Mr. Leonid Finklestein the Russian Jewish journalist and author, who, while a mem her of a Soviet delegation, in England several weeks ago, ask ed for, and was granted, political a.syluni.
The first wave of Jewish emi grants would later be followed by another great wave, Mr Finklestein told a JCNS report er this week, in an interview, In the first wave there would

be mostly the elderly and the religious, but Russian-Jewish youth had also now been fired with the idea of the State of Israel and they, too, would want to leave.
There had been a strong and dramatic reawakening of Jewish consciousness in Russia. This was largely due to the discrimination and prejudice which Jews had to endure in Russia. The bond which now united Russian Jews was oppression. The Government was vsing anti-
semitism to distract attention from major problems. But Rus sian youth was trongly against the present ( -emment, and partly because oS this showed much sympathy for the plight of the Jews.
Russian anti-Israel propaganda had no effect on Jewish youth, Mr. FinkeL ein added. They ignored it and were stirred by the achievements of Israel. Many listened in nightly to Kol Israel radio. Significantly, there had been a sharp decline
i n intermarriages involving Jews, and there were far more religious Jews in Russia than was generally believed.
Mr. Finkelstein stated that he had become bitterly disappointed with the Soviet regime because of its antisemitism and general unjust policies. He had planned his escape to the West for ten years though he had been highly successful as a writer on the staff of a Russian scientific journal.
Silly Chauvinists In Lebanon
It is as certain as anything could be that the devout Christ ian Hebraists who put the words Urim V'tummin" on Yale University's crest in 1701, recalling Aaron's breastplate, never Ireamed that their Alma Hater would fall foul of the Arab boycott authorities two-and-a-half centuries later. But it did.
Mr, Lee Griggs, a Yale gradu ate, told the "Yale Alumni Ma gazine" how, when he arrived i Beirut from Toyko, the Leba^r-o impounded his collection of gramophone records, to make

"Five days later," Mr. Griggs's story continues, "I was sun' moned to the Customs Bureau and accused of pur\'eying Israeli propaganda through (gramophone) records. I denied it. Triumphantly they produced a Yale Glee Club recording ... The customs men admitted that the record wasn't offensive, but the cover certainly was. It bore the Yale Univtrsity seal, and thereon was emblazoned—hor-ror.s—Hebrew script.
"I pointed out that Yale had ils .seal long before Israel was a jjlcam in Ben-Gurion's eye. Never mind, they said, the record would have to be destroyed.
