Jerusalem - Nineteen years after he first came here as a member of the U.N. Special Committee on Palestine, Justice Ivan Cleveland Rand is just as convinced as he was then that there was no other course but to recom -mend the establishment of a Jewish State.
"The world body launched you into troubled times, and the hatred all around you had some unfortunate results." he admits, "but with the Jewish situation in the world as it was after World War II.
we were well aware that to den^- your last and only hope, would have spelled disaster. 1 shudder at the possibility.'' said Justice Rand, who is now on a visit to Israel.
Vividlj' recalling the days of summer 1947 when the 11-member UNSCOP team toured Palestine, the 82 -year -old former Canadian Supreme Court member remarks without hesitation: "I can saj' without doubt that the concepts which your State has brought to life in .Asia are those which our UNSCOP team envisaged when it rec-
ommended independent slate-hood for the Jewish people. No other people could have made this country the success that it is today." WISE LEADERSHIP Justice Rand said he felt Israel had become what it was today thanks to two ingredients - a devoted people and wise leaders. At the time of the UNSCOP tour, he said, the Jewish leadership at once impressed him with their statesmanlike approach. State Of Israel Honour Roll
The State of Israel Bond Organization of Toronto takes pride in acknowledging the participation to date of the following Congregations, their Rabbis and leaders in the forthcoming High Holy Day Appeals, as they have done for
more than a decade.
This has become a tradition in synagogues througout the United States and Canada since the inception of the Israel Bond Campaign when worshippers express their spiritual kinship with the people of Israel as well as their determination to lend them economic support. Synagogues of all three branches of
Judiasm — Orthodox, Conservative and Reform — have played a leading role in strengthening the economic foundations of the young nation and enabling it to provide the essentials of a self-reliant life for 1,300,000 immigrants during the past eighteen years.
As part of their observance of the High Holy Days in the year 5727, these Toronto Synagogues are joining in a special Israel Bond effort to promote the development of Israel.
