V/hat's The Hurry?
BY RUTHIE
Kvcrything is run, run, run. We're always in a hurry -fj)inR no place.
Have to go to work early? It wouldn't occur to you to ^ivc ynurscir an extra half hour. Just the mention of breakfast, and your eyes are glued to the clock.
"(iotta run or I'll be late."
You're at the hairdresser's.
•'Hurry up, Tony. Please. And may 1 have my manicure while I'm under the dryer? 1 must meet someone in an hour. Hurry!"
(Jod forbid, if you give yourself some leeway.
"1 must hurry home. It's close to dinner. I haven't prepared a thing."
Wouldn't it have been smarter to take care of the preliminaries in the morning?
.And if we stop to think why we're always knocking ourselves out, ive couldn't even come up with the answers.
But the one who gives me the biceest oain in the neck is the mama who rushes, bribes or what-you -wills her youngster ahead.
"If you make grades four and five this year and go intc six next year, I'll buyyou the nicest present."
"If you practise the piano two hours a day, not one, you'll gel something extra special."
"My baby," boastfully, "Started kindergarten at four. I didn't wait till he was five."
1 can't understand this pressure, this hurrying the kids through life. The only one who benefits is Mama. It docs something to her vanity if she can boast.
But what if her ideas, her pushing boomerang? Later on she wonders why the youngster maybe stutters or is ornery or needs psychiatric treatment or feels like an outcast in society.
.So what if the child doesn't make two classes in one? He won't grow up? He won't have friends? He won't make a living? .She won't be able to diaper the baby and make formulas?
Of course. Mama can't show off.
My moUier used to have a friend whose daily theme song was,
"My Gertie? There's nobody smarter." .And I used to cry, "What don't you talk like that about mer*
Mama in her wisdom would smile, "I let others praise my children." Well, you know, S.P.S, - self-praise smells.
But when I passed a rigid exam for entrance to a special school and Gertie didn't - don't ask! Mama never said a word but did she look taller!
Papa was always afraid I'd be a loner, never have friends, because 1 wks'able to get alohg by myself. Whenever I practised thepiano overtime, he yelled.
"Genoog shoin hocken hultz (enough already chopping wood). You'll be a pianistka a week later. Go play with the kids."
Maybe he was using psychology. Because if he forced me to practise, could be I wouldn't enjoy good music today the way I do.
Anyway, I never felt pressured. And you know what? 1 got there.-1 didn't miss getting a nice husband, 1 have good children, kein eyen hora (no evil eye) and I get everything done, even pavullya (slowly).
Oh yes, one good thing. Comes a yomtov (holiday), my children run to shool. Happy New Year, everybody, and to shool you can run. Don't dawdle!
