Sensational Discovery In Prophet Elija'h Cave
Haifa, (JCN.S) - The liund-reds of pilgrims visiting the Cave of Lli.jah during this month of Elul, prior to Rosh Hashana, are now certain they arc continuing a tradition which is at least 1,500years old, after the discovery of Byzantine inscriptions by a team from the Government Antiquities Department. During the last month, the team have removed a 4mm-thick layer of plaster from the east and west walls of the cave, uncovering some 150 inscriptions left by pilgrims during the Byzantine period.
Man^- inscriptions are easily legible, while others are faint and partly spoiled by later visitors who super-imiiosed their own letters on those already scratched on the walls. Most of the inscriptions are Greek, a few-Latin and one is in Hebrew.
Nearly all inscriptions bear a supplication: "Remember" (mnisii" in Greek) followed by the pilgrim's name and sometimes by tJie names of members of his family. The Prophet's name in Greek, Ellas, is found among some of the inscriptions.
Some of the inscriptions, made in oval, square and
graffito Greek script, were apparently made by professional artisans paid for the job, judging by their fine execution.
Among the 120 legible inscriptions there are recurring names such as Alex-andros, Sosias, Ptolemios, Demetra, Julianos, Magna and Candide. One obviously Hebrew name, translated into Greek, is "Menaseas" Menashe. The only name legible in the Hebrew inscription, "Yitzhak Bar Koma" is also found in the Beit .Shear! m catacombs.
One pilgrim, a soldier, left the inscription, "Remember Germanos the soldier, his wife and children, and save them." Some inscriptions begin with "May I be happy", to "May 1 be healthy." .Ml inscriptions indicated that the supplications arc made to Elijah the Prophet.

Torah Centre In Our Midst
In the early spring of 1959 a visionary group of communal leaders laid the groundwork for the Ncr Israel Yeshiva College of Toronto.
The Yeshiva opened its doors in September of that vear with a student, body of twelve. All educational and dormitory facilities were housed in one modest building.
From this humble and experimental beginning there has developed a major Canadian educational institution. The name Ner Israel of Toronto is honored and respected across the length and breadth of Canada.
\er Israel has grown rapidly over the years in terms of student body and the construction of.sorely needed physical facilities.
Modern classroom and dormitory buildings were e-rected in 1961 and 1963 respectively. The new dormitory and dining room building was dedicated in honor of Meyer and Minnie Lebo-\ic. Mr. Meyer Lebovic is the Immediate Past-Presi-dcj)t't)f-i\"cr Israel and Mrs. -Minnie Lebovic was first president of- the Ladies' Auxiliary. The high school students arc still making ^use of a prefabricated pbr-(able building as a BeisHam-cdrash.
This pas-t year Ner Israel students carrying a double , curriculum of Hebrew and ; Ce(ieral studies scored very high on the provincial Grade 13 e.vaniinations.
Over TlTj, of the Grade 1.3 M'arks/ were I'"irsl and Sec-
ond class honor marks. The Jiirteen students in the class have all been accepted by the Lniversities of their choice.
The Yeshiva is dedicated to the development of a genuine elite, steeped in the Tal -mud and Jewish Law, ready and prepared to face the problems of modern day youth.
This year the student body numbers 110 in the high school and 30 in the university-level division. The major portion of students are from Toronto. Twenty-five students are from Montreal-others come from Hamilton, Ottawa and Winnipeg. America students hail from ten states and from as far away as California. South America is represented by a student from Uruguay.
This is the true indication that Ner Israel's reputation lias spread far and wide.
Ner Israel's General Studies classes have been inspected by the Ontario Department of Education for the past four yeai-s. The Department has consistently reported on the high standards of student achievement, the commendable progress, the exceptional level of the teaching staff.
With a budget of over two-hundred thousand dollars per \ear wholly derived from Uiition and^jTiyate funds, the Yeshiva has proven that ai large f scale /institution of higher Jewish learning.can exist and function in modern day Canada. The problems liowever arcfarfromsolved. Due to the rapid growth and

MESSAGE FROM THE
ROSH YESHIVA
Harav Y.aakov Weinberg
Since the destruction of the Second Temple the central insti&tion that gives vitality to Jewish life has been Yavneh Ahahamaya, the institution of higher Jewish learning.
No wonder, then, that every "ewish community sougjit with all its might to have such an institution in its midsL No wonder that every member of that community felt the need to participate and share in the establishment and maintaining of the Yeshiva Gedolah - that place of higher learning from which we draw all the spiritual leaders, the teachers, and the informed laity who give viability to Judaism.
It is also the task of the Yeshiva Gedolah to create an atmosphere of scholarship and respect for scholarship in its conmiunity. Knowledge and awareness have ever been of the very essence of our faith. And the Yeshiva Gedolah must provide for all members of the community the opportunity to study.
The Jewish community in Toronto has at last accepted the fulfiUment of its duty to create a Yeshiva Gedolah. The Ner Israel Yeshiva College of Toronto is established as an institution that provides a program of study at the very highest level of Jewish scholarship.
Certainly there is much that Ner Israel must yet do to carry out its obligations to the Jews of Toronto. I am confident that given the resources, Ner Israel will even more fully meet the needs of the community.
We all owe a debt of gratitude to those men of good will and great vision who undertook the arduous task of founding Ner Israel. We also owe the debt of recognizing our own obligations to participate in the maintenance and growth of this centre of learning.
We at the Yeshiva are fuUy confident that the Jews of Toronto will respond with that full measure of devotion that will make possible the ever increasing growth and service of Ner Israel Yeshiva College.
A Ksiva Vachasima Tovah to you all.
expansion of the High School and University depai-tments t has been necessary to greatly increase the size and versatility of the Hebrew and General Studies faculties at the Yeshiva. It will also be imperative within a year to add classroom and dormitory accommodations to house the growing number of students flocking to Ner Israel
The name of Torah burns ever bright at Ner Israel. In the coming years we are certain greater efforts will be made to achieve the true amalgamation of Torah V-DUAS, (religious and secular knp^wle^e) within the studentS^ of Toronto's Ner Israel. / ^
Under the guidance of the renowned Rosh Yeshiva, Harav Yaacov Weinberg, Shlita, the post-graduate depart-rent at the Yeshiva has grown at an unprecedented rate.

The devoted Ladies' Auxiliary has been an important force in the development of Ner Israel. Among its most active members are: Mrs. Bella Cooperman, President; Nfrs. Becky Korzen, First Vice President; Mrs. Toba Blitz, Second Vice President; Mrs. Shirley Figdor, Recording Secretary; Mrs. Frances Grubner, Treasurer; Mrs. W. Goodman, Tea Convener;
