Must Be Raised Here Before The December 31st Deadline
For The Relief Of Suffering For The Restoration Of Art
Recent floods in northern Italy have resulted in great loss of life and damage is estimated at 3 billion dollars. In cities and towns on the Arno and the Po, every resident was affected severely. The ancient Renaissance cities of Venice and Florence, art centers of the civilized world were Inundated.
And the floods conthiue.
The Canadian Flood Relief For Italy was established in mid-November by a number of leading Canadian citizens concerned with the plight of the Italian people and the loss and damage to art.
Among the honorary patrons are: Hon. Judy LaMarsh; Sen. Keith Darey; Hon. Paul Hellyer; Hon. Allan Grossman; Hon. John Yaremko; Hon. George Drew; Lady Eaton.
It is a non-profit organization established on a province wide basis. With headquarters in Toronto at the King Edward Hotel, it has regional committees in HamU-ton, Windsor, Guelph, London,
North Bay, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Fort WiUiam and Port Arthur. Other regional committees are behig established.
The campaign will be a short one ... 30 days.
The hiaugural meeting to launch the drive for $300,000 was held on December 1st. The campaign will terminate December 31st.
Two-thirds of the funds collected will be used for direct aid, such as clothing, food, medicines and to aid in the rehabilitation of the 8,200 artisans and craftsmen who have lost their means of livelihood. The remainder of the fund will be turned over to the Ontario Art Gallery Committee and the Nation' al Gallery at Ottawa to admhiister the restoration of damaged paint' ings and sculpture.
A special project of the Canadian Flood Relief For Italy is "Operation Medicines". Donated medi-ekes, drugs and supplies will be airlifted to the stricken area within a week.
The children of Toronto are donating toys to be distributed among children of northern Italy as the season's holiday gifts as an expression of solidarity. These toys wUl be airlifted by Canadian Pacific Airlines on December 19th and again on January 2nd in time for holiday distribution.
From a cultural standpoint, arrangements are being made to hold an auction of pabitings donated by Canadian artists from across the country. The proceeds of the auction will be utilized in art restoration projects.
School children, trade unionists and women's organizations are urged to meet immediately in order that the objectives of the Canadian Flood Relief For Italy be reached to meet the present emergency.
Everyone is asked to donate. Contributions can be mailed to the Canadian Flood'Relief For Italy headquarters at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto, to the regional committees or to any chartered bank in Ontario. Receipts will be issued for income tax purposes.
