Jerusalem, -(JCN$) Rabbi Dir. Louis Rabinowitz, the former Chief Mhdster of the United Hebrew Congr^atim of J<^annesburg, and now a resident of Israel, has explained in the Orthodox magazine, "Panim el Panim", why he refiised to johi' Israel's Chief Rabbis and 350 dther members of the rabbinate in signing a psak dh) (a religious ruling) on the conduct of autopsies.
The psak din stated that autopsies were forbidden by the law of the Torah in all circumstances except where life could be saved, and even then were permitted only with the approval (tf a qualified rabbi in eaci) case.
Rabbi Rabinowitz finds this altogether too sweeping. The classical ruling on autopsies was given by Rabbi Ezeklel Landau in Qie ei^t-eenth centuiy, but since then says Rabbi Ri^inowitz,med-ichie has made enormous strides partly as the result of autopsies, ol which Halacha must take account.
K the rabbis were toadopt this more reasonable attitude instead d issuing a categorical ruling, they could hope to convince the
doctors that the Hialacha should be obeyed in other matters, such as the reverent disposal of the remains, says Rabbi Rabinowitz.

Rabbi Landau's distinction between a patient suffering from the same disease as the deceased iQX)n whom the autopsy is to be perfonned and one who is not, is no longer realistic, declares Rabbi Rabtaowitz.
What is required, he states. Is the frank rec-pgnltion that Where there is a conflict of duties - between the duty of saving life and that of refraining from the mutilation at a corpse -Judaism is on the side of life.

In a letter he advises an observant Jew who had lost his faith to continue topractice the mitzvot because the/ Jewish way is worthy of being preserved even if it can ho longer be understood Un terms.of divine worship. \
