Have you ever noticed how. when you're by yourself, the oddest thoughts crop up? And when you read the newspaper and come across an item describing certain predicaments, haven't you sometimes placed yourself in such a situation?
Like a robbery. God forbid. You wonder how you'd react.if you were confronted bv a pistol, God forbid.
Me — I'd be finished in a second. Heart attack, God forbid again.
Yet, who knows? At-certain times we sur-,prise ourselves.

Take Mama, for instance. She always.was a brave soul.
I remember one time, when I was a teenager. It was a day Mama and Papa dreamed about. Their first insurance policy had matured. And Mama went to the company to collect. Though I never knew the amount,, it was at least a couple of thousand dollars.
Nu, she had no time to deposit the check; she'd do it the very next day. Meanwhile, that night she was to take me for a pair of shoes.
Of course, she wouldn't leave that much money lying around the house. But somehow she didn't do what was her wont — tie it in a knipp (knot) and pin it to her bra. Of all silly things, she left it in her purse.
Well, here we were, walking on the avenue arm in arm. Traffic was heavy. And though we conversed, most of my thoughts were elsewhere. So I didn't notice anything peculiar.
All of a sudden I saw her, glaring up into a boy's face, yelling, "You gonlff (crook), a fire on you, leave my arm alone!"
I was in a daze. I don't know what was coming off. Then, just as quickly, traffic stopped for a red light.
Nu, did that guy run!
*■ * ♦ * ♦
As we pieced it together, this fellow brushed against her arm, hoping she'd drop her pocket-book. "
But it didn't work. For once Mama's arthritis came in handy. She got a cramp in her arm and couldn't move it. The more he nudged, the more the arm froze.
At the change of traffic lights, he gave up.
And we continued our walk. We bought shoes, shopped around, came home, told Papa —
then Mama fainted.
* * * * *
Another incident occurred years after I married. This was one night when I was home alone with the kids. Ned was working late and Mama, who lived in the same building, was at a meeting.
About nine-thirty, the doorman phoned up on' the intercom: "Excuse me, but is your mother home?"
"No", and my heart skipped a beat.
"Well, we found her purse outside the door, with the contents scattered."
Children alone.or not alone did I make^a dash downstairs! I met Ned coming into the lobby and told him what had happened. It didn't take long for the neighbors to congregate.
You can imagine what we were thinking. There was such toomi (noise) and confusion. Nobody had any constructive idea, even calling the police. Anyhow we were concerned about Mama.
Just as someone began to think rationally, who came along — Mama, breathless and mad.
"That goniff, a shvartz yoor off eem (a black year on him), got away"
I was so happy to see her, my knees buckled under.
* • * ♦ ♦ *
The story? Half-way down the street. Mama noticed someone following her. He must have expected her to continue walking biit she turned to go into the house. Whereupon he/made a quick move for her handbag. And he was so rough, everything spilled out. At Mama's screams, he panicked, dropped the purse and ran.
And she went after him. It didn't matter she had arthritis and normally couldn't lift a foot; her heart condition didn't bother her; her bulk didn't slow her down. She had a one-track mind — to
get the thief. . ,
She only gave up after blocks of runnmg; he
had disappeared.
"But thank God you're alright. Why did you
chase him?" ." ,. .„ \
"I didn't notice that the things spilled out. I didn't care about the money". Calmly, "I just didn't want him to get the keys to the apartment."
"But weren't you afraid?"
"Afraid? With God up there watching?"
Of course, five days later, when the excitement wore off, Mama fainted.
; * • ♦ * * *^
One thing: I don't want the chance to find out how brave I am.
