My introduction to The Broom as other than that of sweeping was onie of fascination. It was when Mama one time grabbed it in desperation and chased Papi around the dining table. He had left a trail of cigarette ashes on the freshly washed kitchen floor.
Not that she intended using it. But it gave Papa a scare. From then on he wound up smoking at the kitchen sink, the water tap running to wash down the ashes as he flicked them off.
\ Many years later he got even. Mama came home from a trip to Europe with a newly acquired habit — smoking. And though it took an expensive holiday to start her offy he didn't resent it. Because she couldn't pick on his smoking anymore; she had her own ashes to bother about.
Rabbi Irwin M. Blank, first non-Cotholic cleric on New York's Fordham focult/, enjoys a light moment. To set them thinking about stereotyped notions concerning Jews, he presented concept of a Jewish cowboy.

During my early teens The Broom never left my side. It'served as a prop during calisthenics and ballet.
.The girls iii our circle were very talented. We all took our music seriously. I still remember one of the girls, Zelda Fibish, who studied ballet and practised teaching on us.
Sometimes you lose track. And I often wonder whether she is from the famous Fibish Dancers. Maybe I'll take the time to find out one day.
Anyway, we used bur brooms as partners, as wands, for support, anything that required clutching.
My little, old broom stood next to me most of the time because I was the accompanist.
We had loads of fun up there on the third floor. Often a group of neighborhood boys congregated on the opposite side of the street; they'd look up and whistle. And just to show off, we'd raise our brooms still higher and pretend not to notice them.
Since we knew their families, we'd invite them up. Mama prepiared a nosh and we wound up having a wonderful party.
Later on Zelda gloried in her element. She led the broom-dancing to the accompaniment of a germinating orchestra.
As it turned out, besides me at the piano, Kermit (I forgot his last name) was at the drums and Larry Cohen (who later became a top orchestra leader under another name) played a mean sax.
* * * * *
' But mostly The Broom was used as an offensive or defensive.
Like when Mama would sh6o away the cats and dogs from the front lawn.
Or the times she held it over our heads when we wouldn't practise ior a whole hour.,
Practising was poison to us kids. But' Maiha and The Broom msisted:
"You'll be sorry when you grow up and remain a dope!"
As always, she was right.
■»'****.
My broom has another use. Don't laugh, but I sweep the snow.
Who needs a shovel? When it's snowing, every ten minutes Igo out and fluff the snow off the steps to make a path. '
Actually I do it because of the arm exercise. Maybe I look like a nut from the booby-hatch but it's fun.
And you can rid yourself of a lot of frustrations. Bam — for this! Slam — for that!
And you should see your rosy, tingling cheeks and glowing eyes after such a session! It's the cheapest way to get a facial.
That's when you really appreciate your little, old brooin. Though you wind up swearing when you notice the callouses on your palms. But you can't have everything.
. : * * * * *
A final thought amuses me. One^ halloween night I'll get up enough gumption to dress like a witch and go out with The'Broom. The ideas that gives me!
Would you like to try it?
