The East Side, was far trom being the Golden Land, but few Jews at tlie turn of the century asked ^estions. They lived in its slum jungles, its ugliness and its crowded tenements, and worshipped in its small, crowded synagogues. IW established their Yiddish newspapers, gradually built new synagoguesV organized cultural and educationalprogrammes to hasten the process of acculbiratiqn, founded a Yiddish theatre and built a way <^ life.
Forty - and even 20 -years ago, the Lower East Side still could be called a thriving

Jewish community. But not now. For just as fervently as Jews fought their battlies for adjustment^^:^^ to a new American society,: so have tiiey deserted tiie Lower East Side. Perhaps there are . 50,000 left; once there were a million. Except for a small Orthodox minority and a few bid buildings, many of which still post dusty islffis recalling a bygone era, there Is little left of Jewlshness In this cradle of American Jew-^ry.
True, some Jewish landmarks stiUexIst,likeWeitz-man's, the famous delicatessen On Delancey Street, where office - hungry politicians think they are winning tlie Jewish voteby munching knishes during election campaigns. The majority of the sh(4>s are still owned by Jews and many of the Tenements still have Jewish landlords, but the l^ss said about that the better.
EMERGENCY REPAIRS There is the Beth HamI-' drash Hagodol which cries out for emergency l^inds for repair. Another synagogue, Anshe Odessa, is a Puerto Rican Eglesia, one of the many signs of the new immigration that has replaced the old. A synagogue on Rivington Street has seats for 1,500, but only about 40 men attend Sabbafli services.
Jewish merchants adniit-tedly make a good living in the neighbourhood, but they do not live ttiere. They live on Long Island, in the Bronx, or in near-by Brooklyn. Out of 20 Jewish merchants in-
terviewed, only one lived on ; the Lower East'Side.
But Jews still come for bargains -. himdrieds of antique, clothing and novelty shops are operi on Sunday. It Is the only large business secttoii in New York that is legally open that day, thanks to thb recent New York State law which permits shops closed on the Jewish Sabbatti to be open on Sunday. The law is honoured in the breach: most of the shops stay open seven days a week.
Thousands of biit-of-town Jews visit the:i^strict daily, in search of fellgious articles ranging from mezuzot to a shochet's chalef, to a talit, to an engagement certificate, to religious music, to sifrei Torah and ark hangings, books in Hebrew and Yiddish ^ they jure aU there. There are reli^otis department stores llk^ J. Levlne & Sons where the JEWISH CHRONICLE can be bought.
But even the reminders of the old business days are not the same. The Orchard St. pushcart stands now mainly serve Negroes and Puerto Ricans. In the old days the stand-owtiers used to cry their wares in Yiddish; now they have learned enough S^lMuiish to advertise their bargains in a Spanish as Yid-dishr^flavourfsd as their English continues to be.
The exodus of Jews began years ago. As they acquired position, status and money, they Rioved to better accommodation in the area, then

to better heighbburhoods, especially when the new generation was being born. And whilie the new generation W3s glad to get away, time has lent the Lower East Side the glamour of nostalgia, larid Its alunini speak warmly of it in their drawing-rooms oh Parlt Avenue and Beverly Hills.
Jewish leaders In tlie area claim that It could again become a thriving'Jewish community if middle-income apartments were built. But these,' according to the urban renewal regulations, have to be built alongside low-income projects.
REVIVAL UNLIKELY
would these draw Jews back? It is unlikely. The
pattern has been, and; prob-. ably will continue to be, that American .Jews- cling \o white, suburban neighbourhoods, and it is: the rare exception who will choose to live in a multi-racial area, and in an "integrated" apartment h^iise; and certainly not al(M)gside a multi-racial housihg project.
Jews like to recall the Lower East Side as It once was: crowded and poor, but Jewish siiburbanife takes the children on a Sunday drive down Delancey and Essex and Hester and all ttie other famous streets and says: "There's where {neandma used to live; This was once a Jewish neighbourhood.*'.

There's more than one way to see Europe. The trick Is to take advantage of CPA's two convenient European routes ... one way there, another way home — with extra cities in between.
If you'd like to see Southern Europe first, take
a CPA flight to Lisbon, Madrid or Rome (once there you can si^itch to any of 70 airlines for connecting flights to the other cities of your choice) Then jet home CPA from Amsterdam. ,
Or, if you prefer, sfarr with CPA's route from Montreal to Amsterdam and go the other way around. -
Whichever routing you choose, CPA's extra cities plan enables you to see much more oif Europe at no dxtrafare. For exahnple, on your Rome fare you can also
visit Londori, Paris, Zurich, Geneva, Milan, Venice, -Vienria, Munich, Frankfurt, Dusiseldorf and Brussels. And you can vary the itinerary to suit yourself. •
Even if you want to make your last stop a city CPA doesn't visit, you can jet home direct with another airline using your original CPA ticket.
Check with your travel agent, or CPA, and find out how much more of Europe you can see by travelling one CPA route to Europe and another route home.
Let CPA jet you there.
