You know, you can fool people sometimes in : many respects. Like, for instance, age — if you don't look too closely.
You can clip off a few years if you color the gray, in your ha r; you can smile like an idiot to keep your drooping jawline from sagging; you can run even if you have to bite your lips from yelling, ouch! You can do lots of things to cover up the passing of time. But whom do you think you're fooling?
I used to think Mama was exaggerating because she always complained she couldn't sleep. I never could understand her. Why, just the touch of a feather landed me in dreiamland.
Now? To tell you the truth, I hate to admit
it.
First of all, I can sit for hours on a chair thinking about going to bed — but not budging. Somehow I can't collect the energy to pick myself up. My eyes actually droop yet I don't go to sleep.
Then, with a long drawn zifts (sigh), I finally stand up, stretch, yawn and prepare for slumber.
I'm so tired, I'm sure I'll fall asleep the minute I tumble into bed.
Do I? Huh! The second my head hits the pillow, a million thoughts enter my mind.
Did I take the steak out of the freezer so it'll thaw overnight?. Are the kids covered? Did I lock the side door? I don't remember. Is the bathroom light on, just in case? I must not forget to press a gym suit before I wake the kids.
I toss, turn and twist.
I miist have fallen asleep because, next thing I know, I'm wide awake, not tod tired, and, raring to go.
I look at the clock. Only two in the morning! Is that all!
So I'm back in bed. I'm asleep — I figure.
I get up; I look again at the clock. It's three-thirty.
Why don't I sleep? Who's bothering me? When the kids were babies, I prayed for this. And now look.
Nu, so I'm in bed again. Ah!
But the "Sh" changes to "oi" — a leg cramp, not wishing it on you. '
Off I go again, quickly to the cold bathroom tiles. Nasser should feel like this!
Okay, the pain subsides and leaves me limp. So off to bed. It's only four-fifteen.
But who could sleep? My better half is whistling through his nose. ,
Ann Landers says, be glad your partner is there snoring.
Nu, so I'm glad. But if only he'd stop a little bit so I could shut an eye!

Good, it's quiet. So now I'm hungry.
Just a little something — derkvicken s'hartz (reviving the heart).
That little something takes maybe a half-hour.
Okay; i'm Teady to sleep. I'm entitled. I've
been'up pr^tjftBtty;.fJl night. ^

Back to bed. Just a little snooze. Suddenly a hand nudges me — and not so gently.
"Mommy, Mommy, stop! You're snoring like a locomotive! It's seven-thirty and I'll be late for school."
So go say you've hardly slept. Who'll believe
you?
As for snoring! Me? Stop kidding. I don't snore. Anyway, I don't believe it. I'm not getting that old already. Or am I?
As I said before, you can fool anybody sometimes. But not good, old Time.
